Colossal Statue Dominates Sarasota Bayfront
Approach Island Park on Sarasota Bay and you will see people lined up for a photo with the town's biggest celebrity, the statue titled Unconditional Surrender. Seward Johnson mined history and turned Alfred Eisenstaedt's famous photograph of the sailor and nurse on V-J Day into an enormous 3-dimensional giant.
Jack Curran gave the city $500,000 to keep the 26-foot painted aluminum giants displayed prominently on Gulfstream Avenue for the next decade. The city commissioners accepted the gift after months of controversy.
Despite the city commission vote, the enormous statue continues to raise questions and inspire controversy. Is it art? Is it tacky? Does it honor veterans? Meanwhile, aging sailors lining up to claim that their big smooch inspired the big story.

Muscarello Claims "Kissing Sailor" Title
Veteran Joins Other Smooching Wannabes

Carl "Moose" Muscarello of Plantation, Florida, claims that Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt immortalized him as a young man by catching Muscarello in a photograph that became an instant classic.
Time magazine labeled the photo as one of the 10 greatest moments in photojournalism.
In 1980, Edith Shain of Los Angeles identified herself as the nurse in the photo, which Eisenstaedt confirmed. At least 10 Navy veterans claimed distinction as the Kissing Sailor.
In 1995, Muscarello broke 50 years of silence about what happened that day with details that tentatively convince Shain that he was the one.
For more about the V-J Day in Sarasota and Carl "Moose" Muscarello AKA "The Kissing Sailor," please read the article in the August 14, 2009 Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

- The city offers many free activities: the beach for swimming, walking, relaxation and shell collecting, being in nature and meeting people; the libraries for reading, videos and resources; clubs for group activities that often don't break the bank; and free music such as the Van Wezel's Music on the Bay. And, finally, hope in the form of "Unconditional Surrender," whether one chooses to like it or not.

Seward Johnson's cast statues and imitations of famous creations by others have not been well received in professional art circles
John Seward Johnson II (born 1930) in New Jersey, also known as J. Seward Johnson, Jr. and Seward Johnson is an American artist known for his trompe loeil painted bronze statues. His early artistic efforts focused on painting, after which he turned to sculpture in 1968.
Johnson is best known for his life-size bronze statues, which actually are castings of living people of all ages depicting them engaged in day-to-day activities such as a father teaching his child to ride a bike, a woman sunbathing, and two people on a park bench. A large staff of technicians perform the fabrication.
For statues made recently in a series named, Iconic, by Johnson,http://www.sewardjohnson.com/site/index.html biographical information on web site of the subject many of which are very large, a computer program is employed that translates two-dimensional images into statues that are constructed by a machine driven by the program. Often, these subjects are images that already are well known as the works of others, generating heated ethical controversies regarding copyright infringement and derivative works due to substantial similarity issues.

As noted below under family relationships, he is the son of J. Seward Johnson and was raised in privileged social circles. Disinherited by his father, he still inherited great wealth as an heir to a vast fortune derived from pharmaceutical manufacturing founded by his grandfather.
