CHICAGO, May. 7 (UPI) -- A study indicates many parents in the United States fail to follow recommended limits on the amount of time young children should spend watching television.Published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, the study found a fifth of youngsters under the age of 3 have a television set in their bedrooms, The Chicago Tribune reports.
"A lot of these parents are kind of checking out," says study co-author Elizabeth Vandewater of the University of Texas at Austin. "It's not really neglect. It's more like absentee parenting."
Previous studies have found that bedroom TVs are linked with childhood obesity, inactivity and low scores on reading and math tests.
Before the age of 30 months, most children absorb little of what happens on the screen according to Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital in Boston.
He says children that young may even lack the basic visual ability to decode a TV's oscillating lights into meaningful images.
