The artists and the genre I've grown to love.
Kweli and Mos kept me occupied for awhile but I was going to need to find more alternative hip hop artists if I was going to listen to "rap" and still keep my sanity. Then came along Del the Funky Homosapian, I had never heard anything like del in my life, it was so different to what I was used to it felt almost taboo as if I thought to myself, "is he allowed to do this on a record." The album of his I'm referring to is one he did in collusion with Dan the Automator who's most recent work consists of production on the Gorillaz albums.
So now I had another good artists to listen to but unfortunately, unbeknown to me at the time Del wouldn't put out another album until 2008 so as you might assume again I was in search of artists. That is when I came upon El-P and Aesop Rock which both belonged to the same label Definitive Jux, started by El-P ex-member and producer for underground hip hop group Company Flow. Under the Def Jux label I would find a slew of great artists to satisfy my musical hunger for years to come.
My collection of artists wouldn't stay limited to Talib, Mos, Del, and the Def Jux crew, when ever I wanted to find new artists I would look up the collaborating artists on the albums of my new found favorites, or go to underground shows, listen to specialized Internet radio, or just ask around, but one thing is for sure, I'll never run out of music again.
This is a list of just some of the artists that I've come to enjoy:
