Unemployed - No Benefits - Now What?
Ranked #8,113 in Culture & Society, #165,214 overall
WE CAN ALL SPEAK UP FOR THE UNEMPLOYED WITH NO BENEFITS
Are you unemployed and facing the future without unemployment benefits? If you are among the unemployed counting on an extension of unemployment benefits, you are not alone. Unfortunately, at this point, the jobs bill did not pass the Senate. By the end of July 2010, over two million Americans will not have their unemployment benefits extended. They will be left with no job, no benefits, lots of questions and not much hope. The Republicans managed to defeat the jobs bill which included more than extension of unemployment benefits. Although Democrats had modified the original jobs bill to reduce the cost from about $200 billion to $110 billion, the Republicans apparently view this as a political opportunity. The jobs bill included billions that would have added jobs through loans to small businesses, funding for infrastructure development and money for research and development by the private sector.
Creation of jobs and improvement in the economy would not benefit Republicans in the November election. These Republican Senators are concerned with their own political agenda. They are not worried about the millions of working Americans that have been struggling with unemployment and will now face even bigger challenges.
If you are among the unemployed or if you are a small business owner that could benefit from a loan, you can do something about this troubling situation. You can write and call President Obama. Send the message that the unemployment benefits should be extended by executive order. Send the email by visiting http://www.whitehouse.gov and go to the contact section to send your message. Call President Obama's contact number: (202)456-1111 and leave your message. More jobs and extended unemployment benefits until those jobs are created will allow our economy to continue to improve.
FIND HELP WHEN UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS END
What can you do when the unemployment checks stop? First of all, if you are unemployed without benefits or money, you need to put pride on the shelf. It may be difficult to ask for help, but keep in mind the years you have worked and paid taxes. Part of those taxes helped pay for public assistance programs. You probably also contributed to various charitable organizations and to your church. There are many sources of help through government (federal, state and local), community and faith-based groups. Your specific geographical location and family circumstances will be part of determining benefits available to you.
At some point, everyone needs a helping hand. When the economy improves, you'll have a job, pay taxes and make contributions to worthwhile organizations. But right now you need the help you've earned.

NO JOB - NO INCOME - NOW WHAT?
Although the first reaction to job loss may be panic, the end of unemployment benefits with no extension in sight has to bring on terror. Obviously the goal has been and continues to be a new job. Meanwhile, how do you handle this new challenge? You take an action step because this gives you some degree of control over the situation.
TAKE THE FIRST STEP
You must first prepare a budget and evaluate your current financial situation. This budget should list all available money and all assets, especially those assets that can be converted to cash. Next, list all creditors with the total balance owed, monthly payment, due date and account number. Be sure you include the creditor's full name, address and phone number. Make a list of all monthly expenses by priority. Review the monthly expenses and look for expenses that can be reduced. Put your credit cards in a safe place and do not use them. Now you can begin researching any and all available financial resources and help.
