A deer with a single horn in the center of its head - much like the fabled, mythical unicorn - has been spotted in a nature preserve in Italy, park officials said Wednesday, June 11, 2008.

"This is fantasy becoming reality," Gilberto Tozzi, director of the Center of Natural Sciences in Prato, told The Associated Press. "The unicorn has always been a mythological animal."

Scotsman.com News: Unicorns really do exist
The legend of the unicorn has been punctured. The mythical beast with a horn protruding from the centre of its head, blessed with healing powers and a temper tamed only by a virgin's touch is, in reality, just a deer with a wonky gene.
Wired Science: Unicorns Are Real!
Maybe unicorns aren't wholly mythological: a one-horned deer has been spotted in a nature reserve near Florence, Italy. And it's not merely a case of having one weird antler off to one side; it's a horn poking straight out of its forehead.

So what do you think: does this deer count as a unicorn, or are you holding out for a white stallion?

Don't get me started on unicorns!
Actually, there are two traditions, at least in unicorn iconography. One shows the unicorn looking like a goat, another like a horse. (Some actually show a horse with a goat's beard.)
There is a deer in Africa that at a certain angle, looks to have only one horn, and the rhinoceros - with its one horn - has been offered as a source for the unicorn idea. That seems a stretch to me.
A few years ago, a circus showed a one-horned goat as a unicorn.

This is SO not a unicorn...

Hmm... I'm holding out. But it would be cool if something like this started all the stories about unicorns...
