Wild Bird Feeders

A 6th century monk by the name of Saint Serf of Fife was the first person recorded as feeding wild birds. He tamed a robin by feeding it. In 1892 Britain had a very harsh winter. A British National Newspaper asked people to put out food for the birds. This gradually became popular in the U.S. The 2nd most popular hobby in the U.S. is bird feeding. The first is gardening. In 1994 February was named "National Bird-feeding Month" by Congressional decree in the U.S.

In choosing bird feeders, there are several different kinds of bird feeders depending on which type of birds you wish to attract. These feeders include the Seed Feeders, the most common type which commonly hold sunflower seeds, nuts and mixed seeds. This feeder will attract the songbirds such as cardinals, finches, chickadees and Juncos. Black oil Sunflower seeds contain a large amount of fat and are easier to crack than the regular sunflower seeds. These are especially good to put out in the winter because the birds need the oil for nourishment in the winter.

Various beautiful woodpeckers such as the red headed, red bellied, downy and Hairy are always at my feeders and I add nuts with the black oil sunflower seeds along with other mixed seeds. The one seed that I try to avoid is the rapeseeds. The birds do not like them and push them out onto the ground. The less expensive mixed birdseeds have an abundance of rapeseeds. These are light tan and a lot larger than the millet seeds.

There are a variety of bird feeders such as the regular feeders that hold mixed seeds and nuts; The Finch and Siskin feeders which holds niger seeds (thistle seeds); The Oriole feeders - which are usually orange and you can hang orange halves on them or place grape jelly in them; And Hummingbird feeders which are red in color or use red sugar liquid in them. The Hummingbirds will also eat from the Oriole feeders.

Also the Suet Feeders which are wire boxes that hold cakes of fat. The fat cakes can have either berries, sunflower seeds or other seeds in them. They are very inexpensive and last quite a long time in the winter months when the birds need the fat for nutrition and it helps to keep them warm. Practically all of the birds love to eat the fat during the cold winter months.

Squirrels can be a problem as they like to take the seeds from the feeders and hoard them. The manufacturers have created various mechanisms that will keep them from being able to eat from the feeders. There are guards that can be put around them or the house can be placed on a metal pole.

I had only a couple sparrows that would show up around my place before I got 3 birdfeeders and I was surprised how quickly a wide variety of birds came to eat from them.
It is wonderful to wake up in the morning to the birds beautiful songs.
