How to Cure Dog Aggression? Well this Device Was Our Answer

As sweet as this dog looks make no mistake that she does suffer from aggression towards other dogs. We have witnessed it first hand and it places our other dogs at risk. So we had to stop it.

How do I know?

That good looking dog to the left of this text? That is Holly, our youngest dog. It might be hard to believe but she has issues with the other two dogs that we have.

The problem is aggression.

If she feels that she needs the attention or the food which includes treats then she will attack the other dogs.

That Was Simply Unacceptable Behavior!

When the aggression would show itself it was either with me or my wife. Almost immediately panic would take over and Holly would escalate even more. We were acting quickly but staying calm (as Cesar Milan preaches) was not in sight.

My wife would try to get between them and pull Holly off. Several times she just could not do it because Holly is the largest dog and my wife is not strong enough to stop her.

Several times I would come running and I would be yelling at Holly. Just as Cesar has stated many times that only pushes the dog even higher out of control.

A few times I would just grab Holly and lay on her until she was laying down and it would take a few minutes for her to calm down. My wife and I both knew that I would not be around all of the time so it was extremely important to have a way to bring Holly under control quickly..

So we had to figure something out and Cesar was on the west coast. A considerable distance away.

Another Benefit Discovered

It's a stray dog repellant!

That's right you heard it here first, a stray dog repellant!

We are fortunate to have a large yard so we have an electric fence for them That keeps them safe and out of the road.

They know the limits of the fence so that gives them full access to the yard.

The downside is it also makes them a prisoner to their own yard. Meaning, if a stray dog or animal comes into the yard they could be at their mercy.

So it in now our policy to take our air horn outside with us.

Initially, we took it outside for monitoring Holly but two days ago a stray dog waltzed into our yard that we did not recognize.

Needless to say, the air horn uninvited that pup.

How to Stop Dog Barking in the House

Inside Dog Barking Control

When we started this process and discovered that a simple air horn would stop Hollys aggressive behavior we never thought it would have been to this level of success.

In fact, controlling other dogs walking past our yard was yet another example of how great this is.

While those two things are great in their own right this next one is awesome.

We had friends over and this always happens. The dogs go berserk when someone starts walking down the road so a chorus of barking starts in the house and of course no one can hear anyone else due to the barking.

So as a quick response, the air horn comes out.

Instant quiet!

It was not discharged. I just showed it to all three dogs and their barking stopped instantly.

They all know the air horn its the same one in the picture above. They all know the lesson and they all remember.

The funny part is, we still don't know if it will work. No one seems to remember when it was used last. So is there pressurized air in there? I guess i had better replace it now before Holly figures it out. lol

Our Perfect Anti Dog Barking Device

Our Perfect Anti Dog Barking Device

Yes, this is an Air Horn. It fits in the hand easily and it can be fired in a split second.

The first time we use this device Holly jumped out of her skin and ran off.

The dog that was Holly's target was scared as well BUT Holly knew she was the guilty dog.

Our level of anger and being upset just vaporized. We were sort of snickering while our ears were ringing. LOL It was funny.

The cool thing is has worked EVERY time since. Now when we see Holly start to growl or snarl we just show her that we have the air horn and she walks away.

It was success! We won.

Holly's First victim

Ginger is a Spitz mix

Ginger

Poor little Ginger. She is the oldest of our dogs but she is also the smallest. To top it off she only has three legs. She had a tumor on her front right leg and after the 2nd operation it grew back so when the tumor returned we had to have the leg removed up to her shoulder. But she is a fighter in that regard.

However, when Holly is in attack mode she typically goes for Ginger at her throat and then pins her down. But during the worst attack, Holly actually drew blood from Ginger. Luckily it wasn't too bad.

Since we have discovered the air horn, we think Ginger is laughing at Holly.

Holly's second victim

Max is a Black Lab mix

Max

Max is a tad lighter than Holly so size is not an issue with her.

In Max's case, he suffers from arthritis so he has been on a diet for a while now just to help out his joints. The times that Holly has tried to attack him he sort of diffuses the situation himself by turning away and not getting wrapped up in her behavior. If only people were like him.

Even though Max is a large dog and has an intimidating bark, he is a big baby. When approached he runs away. Buts that is okay.

BLAAAAAAASSSSSTTTTT!

Did you hear that?

Our third victim. Well, the tow small dogs could have been the victims. There is a young man in our neighborhood that walks his dogs faithfully, once in the morning and then again in the late afternoon. You can set your clock by this guy.

Whenever our dogs are outside and see him coming they go nuts barking, snorting and drooling. Well, Holly does any way.

It started a little while ago so I called Holly down. She ignored me. One quick blast and she stopped. Max stopped his barking too. It was sort of comical at the moment. Our two dogs turned their heads over their shoulders just looking at me and I imagined they were thinking "What?".

They did walk back to me and laid down in the grass. So far so good.

A few minutes later the young man came back by on his way back to his house. Holly and Max started to growl and then I did my low growl and I showed them the air horn. Enough said. The growling stopped.

The only thing different this time was i believe the young man was watching me to see if I was going to blast him. I didn't see him but I think he probably jumped when I fired it at Holly. LOL

I love this air horn!

I do not have a dog, but I feel that not training your dog to be aggressive is extremely important.

I had never thought to use a air horn, what a great idea...I currently use a gadget that lets off a high pitch noise that only the dogs can hear but it doesn't always work on them...I'll have to give this a try, thanks for sharing...

Nice to know about this air horn. I never knew about this device before and i have a dog that likes barking, so I might use it myself. Your description of the horn effect on Holly made me roll over in laughter.

What a great idea - I should get one to carry so that when big dogs approach when I'm walking tiny Casper, if they look like they will menace I can just let go with a blast! I wish people would keep their dogs restrained in their yards!

I don't have an air horn for our dog, she is so small, but for the bears that come through now and then. Fortunately this year after a bear hunt last season we haven't seen any (yet) on our property, while least year it happened a few times a week.

We used to have a basset hound. He was not aggressive in the "attacking" way, he just loved people. He would run up to them and sometimes bark. Mostly he just wanted to greet them and usually slobbered them at some point. Our problem with that activity is that sometimes others are afraid of dogs and do not recognize that he was not dangerous. On walks, we kept him on a leash if we approached someone we did not know. Thanks for sharing this product. If we ever get another dog, we might need it.

I hear you. That's Holly as well. She barks outside but we translate as "Come here and play with me because I am the important one here!"
