The Origins of the Nativity Set
St. Francis of Assisi was the first person to introduce the three-dimensional nativity scene to the Western world. He placed a straw-filled manger between two live animals--an ox and a donkey. It is said that he brought the idea back after a visit to Egypt in 1220, AD, but there is no known record of where the idea originated.
The first "modern" nativity scene was introduced in Prague by Jesuit priests in the mid to late 1500s.
Many different cultures have their own traditions regarding nativity sets, and while all have different names, they are tied together by the universal depiction of the birth of Christ.

Several years ago I saw a Nativity set in a shop in Taos NM. The Holy family was Indian(Navaho I think) the shepherds were cowboys and the wisemen were Spanish ranch owners in formal dress. All arranged before a livery stable. Has anyone seen anything like this? I would love to find another set since I didn't purchase it at the time.
