A Novella Contest. (Part One)
BY GRACE PUBLISHING (http://bygracepublishing.com) will be releasing a continuity series the winter of 2007-2008 (November and December 2007, January 2008). This series is tentatively titled "Lovett's Mountain Resort" (you are very welcome to suggest an alternate series title) and will include three 50-60K word novels.PARAMETERS/GUIDELINES
~Submit a 2000 word, properly formatted partial that introduces the hero and heroine (see Charity Lovett, above), and a short synopsis of the rest of the novel. The synopsis should also include a list of the characters you intend to include in your novel. Please include intended word count. Please send your submission to uniqueenterprisessubmit@yahoo.com, and include "Sheila and Laura/ Lovett Mountain Resort Series" in the subject line. Your attachments should be saved as an .rtf file. No other type of attachments will be opened.
~The finished novels will be in the 50-60K word range.
~We are looking for authors with complimentary writing styles and voices, able to work well with others, able to portray the common secondary characters. We are especially interested in seeing work from authors and their critique partners.
~This series is tender rather than inspirational.
~Characters: Your hero and heroine are your own, and you're welcome to include secondary characters of your own, however, you are highly encouraged to include as many of the secondaries in the Secondary Character List as your story will support.
~Charity Lovett is *the* major secondary who must be in every novel. She's a matchmaker at heart, and she is the one who facilitates introducing the hero and heroine to each other and has a dab hand in every romance she starts, encouraging, helping, aiding and abetting the couples she's nudging together. Novels should also include the other secondaries (see the Secondary Character List below).
~There will be secondary characters common to all three novels. (Please see Secondary Character List below.)
~Setting: A ski resort in the Rockies, on Lovett Mountain. The resort/ski lodge is owned and operated by Charity Lovett and her 2 grown children.
~We are considering novels from both published and unpublished authors for this series.

A Novella Contest (Part Two)
TIPS FOR SUCCESS~Follow the By Grace Publishing submission guidelines. Please see these at http://bygracepublishing.com/guidelines.html.
~Professional presentation of contest entry is recommended. Clean entries will grab the editors' attention (i.e.- no glaring spelling/punctuation/grammatical/mechanical errors), as will an engaging writing style and voice, and an ability to use the common secondary characters to convey a sense of continuity.
~Open with an irresistible premise to catch the reader's attention. Your novel should be well-paced, leading to a believable black moment and happily-ever-after, as well has having a believable plot; have a hero and heroine the reader can identify with and care for; include compelling conflicts and engages the readers' emotions; ends with a satisfying happily-ever-after, with no threads left hanging.
~Follow the guidelines set forth for this series, and for submitting your work for consideration. Your use of the secondary characters provided, as well as use of the common setting, is very important in conveying a sense of continuity to these three novels. This should be addressed in your short synopsis.

A Novella Contest (Part Three)
SECONDARY CHARACTERS LIST**Denotes secondaries who MUST be included in your novel. You are highly encouraged to make use of all these secondaries, to whatever degree you need them.
~**Charity Lovett: A vital, active woman in her mid-60's. Her hair is more white than the original dark brown, and she has no intention whatsoever of coloring or cutting her long tresses. She generally keeps her hair braided in a single braid. She has hazel eyes, and is 5 feet, 7 inches tall. She is a widow. She refers to her long-deceased husband only as "Mr. Lovett." Her two children are grown and are often found giving Mom a helping hand at the ski resort. She adores her four grandchildren. She has a big heart, and is particularly drawn to those she feels are missing something in their lives. She is a renowned (and notorious) matchmaker. She is warm, giving, understanding and motherly. Charity is very important to this series.
~Aaron Lovett: Charity's son. He's often seen fixing things around the resort. He's in his early 40's, and likes to joke that he and his wife, Melody, were his mother's first "victims" in his mother's long and illustrious matchmaking career. Aaron and Melody have been married 17 years, and have 2 teenaged sons (Broderick, 15, and Byron, 13). Aaron has a tremendous sense of humor and a dry wit, but he is also very discerning of others. He has dark brown hair, edged with silver, and hazel eyes, just like his mother. He's exactly 6 feet tall.
~Melody Lovett: Keeps the books for the resort. She's a lovely, sweet person, often vague, as her sons keep her on her toes. She has short blonde hair and brown eyes.
~Dyann Lovett Walker: Charity's daughter. She runs the Mountaintop Café, which is exactly where its name implies it is: up on the mountain, near the ski lifts. She has light brown hair, blue eyes and is in her late 30's. She's an inch taller than her mother, at 5 feet, 8 inches. Energetic and fast, she's liable to abandon the café in order to give impromptu ski lessons to any small child struggling with their skis. She's proud of the fact that she didn't need her mother's matchmaker skills in finding her husband, Gary. Dyann and Gary have 2 children: a son and daughter: Tommy (12) and Mollie (11).
~Gary Walker: Gives ski lessons at the resort. He's tall, has carrot red hair and blue eyes.

A Novella Contest (Conclusion)
~Elfie Rayder: Head housekeeper. If you need it, she'll find it for you. She's quick to smile, but runs a tight housekeeping staff. Her standards are high and she's very particular. She would never berate a maid in the presence of a guest, but that doesn't mean she won't do so in private. She's Charity's Cohort in Matchmaking, and has been known on more than one occasion to tip her employer towards matchmaking candidates. Elfie is in her late 40's. Her auburn hair is free of silver or gray. She has clear green eyes and freckles. She's short at 5 feet 3 inches, and she's single.~Theo Arndell: Ski instructor. He has light brown hair, sharp blue eyes. He is 5 feet 10 inches tall. He's 33 years old. He has little patience with skiers who take unnecessary risks and has been known to tell a paying customer she's better off enjoying the fire in the lodge, rather than endangering herself and others on the slopes.
~Pellam: The head maitre-de at the resort's 4 star restaurant, The Snowflake. Like Elfie, he runs a tight ship, and is impeccably polite and very formal. He speaks with a very light British accent, which causes folks to wonder. He's 5 feet, 11 inches and slender. In his mid-to-late 50's, Pellam has dark blonde hair and nearly black eyes, which coordinate well with his formal black maitre-de tuxedo. A romantic at heart, he maintains several "dark, secluded corners" in the restaurant for those special dinners Charity arranges for her "victims".
