The United States Flag

"This flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation. The choices are ours. It floats in majestic silence above the hosts that execute those choices, whether in peace or in war. And yet, though silent, it speaks to us - speaks to us of the past, or the men and women who went before us, and of the records they wrote upon it." ~ President Woodrow Wilson, 1917

What is the history of the United States flag? What symbolism does it hold? What does it mean to the nation? What do we want our children to know about this important symbol of the United States? This study answers some of these questions through research, reading, writing, and thinking skills. Materials to use for notebooking or lapbooking are included.

The Pledge of Allegiance

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

This pledge or promise was first said by schoolchildren in 1892 for the 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing in America. Individuals of many thoughts, backrounds, and cultures unite as the American people upon this statement of loyalty. How exciting that although there are so many ideas and opinions in the country that we are still unbreakable (indivisible) with our unique freedoms - striving toward a better country!
