Language often plays a big part in delaying much needed aid to countries fighting the war on poverty. Sometimes, it might help to consider learning a little bit of the language of another people in order to increase communication between cultures.

Because of indoor air pollution

A special thanks to Pocco who brought this to my attention. This is just another reason to give a hand-up to women trying to better their lives.

Indoor air pollution from cooking fires in Third World countries, cause an estimated 3 to 4 million deaths worldwide each year. Daniel Kammen, a professor in the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley, says women and children are much more affected by particulate matter caused by inefficient, indoor stoves.

How Unitus Empowers Women

A novel approach to combatting world poverty

About Global Poverty
Poverty crushes the human spirit. Three billion people - half the world's population - live on less than $2 per day, unable to meet their basic human needs. Malnutrition, lack of health care, substandard housing, and illiteracy breed desperation, disease and daily suffering. Poverty traps future generations in a vicious cycle without hope or opportunity. In an increasingly globalized world, no one is immune to these problems.
Women & Poverty
Of the 550 million working poor, an estimated 330 million are women.

Women work 67% of the world's working hours, and produce 50% of the world's food, yet they earn only 10% of the world's income and own less than 1% of the world's property.

More than 40% of women in Africa do not have access to basic education.
The Microfinance Idea
Microfinance is based on the belief that the poor need a hand up, not a hand-out. This new philosophy emerged in the 1970s in places like Bolivia and Bangladesh as social innovators began to offer financial services to the working poor - those who were previously considered "un-bankable" because of their lack of collateral. Once given the opportunity, not only did clients of microfinance institutions (MFIs) expand their businesses and increase their incomes, but their high repayme...
Women and Microfinance
There are many reasons why women have become the primary target of microfinance services. At a macro level, it is because 70 percent of the world's poor are women. Women have a higher unemployment rate than men in virtually every country and make up the majority of the informal sector of most economies. They constitute the bulk of those who need microfinance services.
