What are the important things to know when choosing a British University? How do you choose a British University?
How do you choose the right university? Where can you get the best information to make your choice? What is university life like? What are the things you need to know so that you can choose the best uni'?
Finding information that explains how to choose a university and how to choose the right university program can be daunting. Information on how to choose a university course is fragmented across university prospecti and of course you need independent university information. Getting an independent university guide is a really good way to help you choose a university. Going to university is a big step and finding a university that suits you is very important.
With so many factors to consider how can you be sure you are making the right choice? There are plenty of resources to help you. These range from official government statistics through to independent student web sites. Whatever you need to know someone has the answer.
British universities have a very high reputation. Choosing the right one to study your specialism involves the consideration of a variety of factors, including teaching and research reputation, facilities, social life, and home town surroundings. Going to university is a complete developmental experience not just a study experience. That's why choosing the right British university is a critical choice.
One thing you might consider is the objectivity of the advice you get when choosing a British University. Is the person you are talking to an agent with a vested interest in recommending the university, or are they completely impartial.
If English is your second language what TESOL grades do you need. Be suspicious if the requirment is low this might seem like good news but beware. Studying in a British University is a particular form of learning that seeks to make you a critically reflective independent learner. This means that there is an expectation that YOU will be responsible for your learning, rather than being entirely dependent on your tutors.
A key implication of this when choosing a British University is that you will have to undertake extensive reading of demanding texts that explore ideas. Even natural Engish speakers find some of these texts challenging as they do not use everyday English. Even notionally practical subjects such as business are based on management theory which in turn draws on philosophical and psychological ideas that are often very abstract.
Masters study in particular means engaging with abstract concepts. Especially in the social sciences where an apprecatiation of philosophical standpoint (positivism / interpretivism) and philosophical concepts (ontology/epistemology) as a bare minimumum are needed not withstanding a grasp of social reserach methods such as action research, ethnography, discourse analysis etc etc.
Natural science students are luckier in the sense that mathematical and physical formulae whilst abstract and complex are more constant in their meaning.

British Universities
All about the different types of university in the UK
Knowing about the different types of university in the UK can help you make an informed choice.
Universities in the United Kingdom have generally been instituted by Royal Charter, Papal Bull, Act of Parliament or an instrument of government under the Education Reform Act 1988; in any case generally with the approval of the Privy Council, and only such recognised bodies can award degrees of any kind. Undergraduate applications to almost all UK universities are managed by UCAS - the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.
Most universities in the country may be classified into 6 main categories:
*Ancient universities - the seven universities founded between the 12th and 16th centuries.
*The University of London, The University of Wales and Durham University - which were chartered in the 19th century.
*Red Brick universities - the six large civic universities chartered at the turn of the 20th century before World War I.
*Plate Glass universities - the universities chartered in the 1960s (formerly described as the new universities').
*The Open University - Britain's 'open to all' distance learning University (est. 1968).
*New Universities - the Post-1992 universities formed from polytechnics or colleges of Higher Education.''

College and university rankings
The College and university rankings are a lists of universities and liberal arts colleges in higher education, an order determined by any combination of factors. Rankings can be based on subjectively perceived "quality," on some combination of empirical statistics, or on surveys of educators, scholars, students, prospective students or others. Rankings are often consulted by prospective students and their parents in the university and college admissions process.
In addition to rankings of institutions, there are also rankings of specific academic programs, departments, and schools. Rankings are conducted by magazines and newspapers and in some instances by academic practitioners. (See, for example, law school rankings in the United States.)
Rankings may vary significantly from country to country. Colleges outside of the English speaking world are believed to have a distinct disadvantage. A Cornell University study found that the rankings in the United States significantly affected colleges' applications and admissionsStudy shows college rankings do matter. In the United Kingdom, several newspapers publish league tables which rank universities.
There has been much debate since the late 1990s about both the usefulness and political correctness of college rankings in the United States. Some higher education experts, like Kevin Carey of Education Sector, have argued that such rankings as the U.S. News and World Report's college rankings system is merely a list of criteria that mirrors the superficial characteristics of elite colleges and universities. According to Carey, "The U.S. News ranking system is deeply flawed. Instead of focusing on the fundamental issues of how well colleges and universities educate their students and how well they prepare them to be successful after college, the magazine's rankings are almost entirely a function of three factors: fame, wealth, and exclusivity." He suggests that there are more important characteristics parents and students should research to select colleges, such as how well students are learning and how likely students are to earn a degree.Carey, Kevin. An objective assessment of student views and experiences
- Mori The National Student Survey
- The National Student Survey (NSS) has been running annually since 2005. It is a survey of mostly final year undergraduates, with the main purpose to help inform the choices of prospective higher education students about where and what to study. Participating institutions and students' unions can also make use of the data to improve the student learning experience.
The survey is conducted across all publicly funded higher education institutions in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and some institutions in Scotland; some privately funded higher education institutions; and all further education colleges in England that offer HEFCE-funded provision within the scope of the survey. It is commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) on behalf of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DELNI). I - The Higher Education Funding Council for England and the NSS
- The National Student Survey forms part of the revised quality assurance framework (QAF) for higher education. The aim of the survey is to gather feedback on the quality of students' courses in order to contribute to public accountability as well as to help inform the choices of future applicants to higher education.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a university degree
Is it necessarily true that gaining a degree is a good thing?
- Advantages and disadvantages of a university degree
- A crucial advantage of university degree is that it is a 'transformational' process that changes the way a person undertakes learning (by becoming more self-directed), changes the way a person manages and manipulates information, and changes the adaptability of the individual in the face of problematic and ambiguous situations.
- Masters Degrees : Advantages and Disadvantages
- The crucial difference to grasp is that Masters education is not simply about absorbing 'given' knowledge. It is a process through which the student is expected to become a more independent, critically reflective individual.
- What is the purpose of Higher Education
- What do you think the aim and purpose of a Higher Education is? For me the clue is in the title of the awards that can be achieved.
A degree implies evidence of a 'degree' of thinking, knowledge, and application that has been formally assessed by legally & professionally recognised assessors and institutions. - On line courses

- Excellent lens for those who would like to earn online college degrees in whichever field they desire. The main advantage to home study is that you have that much needed flexibility allowing you to mould or rather sculpt your degree programme around your current life situation. Excellent work nonetheless.
