Without too much fancy scientific words, I want to explain how to upscale / upconvert DVD player.

It is -simply- Taking In a low resolution ( Standard  Definition SD) Video signal And Bringing Out  a high resolution ( High Definition HD) Video signal.

What is the need for HD DVD's if I already have an Upconversion DVD player? 

In fact, upscaling DVD players does not -really- convert an ordinary DVD into HD DVD just like that, In fact there are limitations for the work of these gadgets and devices.
If you want a REAL HD DVD picture, you must have :

1- HD DVD movie.

For example if you have a HD movie and an upscaling DVD Player but you have a low resolution or SD Screen, you'll not get the HD picture you want , because the display itself have a built in video scaler that converts the HD signal coming from the DVD player into a SD signal which is compatible with the displaying screen itself.

What The Advantage Of The Upconverting DVD player then? 

It is not just the job of upscaling DVD player to modify the signal sent to the display to be compatible with it, the new models of these players contain other video processing devices that have specific characters to do other enhancing activities to the signals such as : De-interlacing, Zooming, Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation and Gamma Adjustment, Noise reduction, all these processing of the signal could enhance and improve the display output, there are a lot which can be benefited of when considering this kind of devices.
