Why Update Computer Drivers?
To make your computer (and you) happier!
There are many reasons to update your computer drivers, but they all amount to the same thing - to make the system run better (and of course get rid of those annoying device driver errors!).Simply put, a computer driver is a computer program that tells the programs and hardware on your computer how to play together nicely. These device drivers translate the commands of the software into commands the hardware can understand. For instance, your printer driver makes sure your word processor can convert what you have typed into a printed page. Your sound driver converts all the audio data into something you can recognize as it comes out of your speakers. Your video driver converts all the 1s and 0s of computer language into something you can read on your screen.
All these programs operate quietly in the background... That is until you have a problem. Then the programs and hardware can no longer communicate correctly, you get those dreaded device errors, and your life becomes much more difficult.
The Manual Way to Update Computer Drivers
YOU get to fix the device driver error!
The first thing you must determine is which driver you need to update. Sometimes this can be very challenging since it is not very obvious. For instance, we had a word processing program that kept crashing. We finally realized our fingerprint scanner driver had a problem. Who would have guessed?Once you know what driver to update, you have 2 choices. You can have Windows attempt to find the correct driver for you (good luck!) or you can try to find it yourself.
If you want Windows to try:
- Start the Device Manager. Finding it may depend upon the version of Windows your system is using. You can usually right click on the MY COMPUTER icon and select Properties. On the Hardware tab, select Device Manager.
- Right-click on the driver you want to update and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
- Select the Driver tab and click the Update Driver button.
- Give Windows permission to connect to Windows Update and continue the update process.
- Restart the computer
If you want to fix the computer driver yourself:
- Find the model number and the manufacturer's name. This may be found on the hardware itself, the documentation it came with, or in Windows Device Manager.
- Visit the manufacture's website and download the correct driver. Some device drivers will install immediately, others will be saved on your system for later installation.
- Install the device driver if not already completed.
- Restart the computer.
