What Does A UPS Surge Protector Do?

An Uninterruptible Power Supply is also referred to as a UPS surge protector and also a battery backup surge protector. It protects your computer not only from power surges but also power outages, voltage spikes and power sags. A power sag is a decrease in the flow of current that lasts more than a few milliseconds, up to a couple of seconds. This is also known as a brownout. The UPS regulates the power flow and when the power stops flowing it acts as a battery backup. It automatically kicks in its battery support and keeps your computer powered by converting battery power to AC power. Depending on the size of your device the length of time that the support lasts can be up to twenty minutes, more than long enough to safely shut down your computer without suffering any loss of data or damaging sensitive components.

The Benefits Of An Uninterruptible Power Supply

The UPS surge protector is more or less a safety cushion for protecting your computer against power surges. When the battery power supply is low the device will sound a beep. Some higher end models come with software that alerts the user that the power supply is low. This same software will also save any opened files and close them before shutting down your computer. While these surge protectors are more expensive, it could save you plenty of lost time and data should you be away from your computer during a power outage.

What To Look For In A UPS Surge Protector

Here are some specs to consider when purchasing a UPS surge protector for your home or office. Regardless of the level of protection you choose, every UPS device will allow you to safely shut down your PC and should be viewed as an inexpensive way to protect your equipment. When it comes to home surge protection the device is typically a "plug and play" tool. All you do is install it and it's ready to use.

  1. Check the UL listing. UL ratings determine the level of protection a surge protector offers. A standard UPS will have UL 1778 listing. This covers your standard desktop with monitor and conforms to the Underwriters Laboratory surge protection standards.

  2. Find the right size for your situation. Your typical computer and monitor requires at least 450V UPS device for proper protection against surges and blackouts. High-powered items like a file server will need something stronger like a 650V UPS.

How Much Surge Protection Are You Willing To Pay For?

If you have valuable equipment to protect or are willing to spend a decent amount of money on superior surge protection then look for line-interactive UPS surge protectors. These will monitor your equipment's performance and constantly surveil the operation to see that it is powered properly. Often the included software will provide a alarm system that alerts the owner of power fluctuations. These devices can run as much as $2000 for high quality protection. Otherwise expect to pay as little as $120 for standard protection.
