Walking the talk
Food is our common ground. Permaculture is a nature-inspired,holistic design system with which we can grow food, build business and create community. If you do not have the space to garden then join a community garden. If there is no community garden in your neighbourhood start one.
A garden can turn strangers into neighbours.
Urban permaculture
everything gardens
How sustainable is it to use so much energy to produce the paper, plastic, Styrofoam and cardboard that we all too often find on our highways, sidewalks and city streets?
How many miles does that 'special' meal travel before you eat it? How many gallons of fossil fuel are used in its production, storage and distribution?
It is time to bring the field closer to the kitchen. Permaculture is a way to make this move. The word permaculture was coined, from the words permanent and agriculture, by its founders, Bill Mollison and David Holmgren.
Since then, for many permaculture designers, including the writer, permaculture is also a contraction of permanent and culture.
Permaculture may best be defined as "Consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature while yielding an abundance of food, fiber and energy for provision of local needs'"

Suburban Renewal - One Backyard at a Time
Peak Moment 37: Jan Spencer shows his quarter-acre permaculture project transforming a typical suburban lot. Lawn and driveway were replaced with fruit and nut trees, vegetables, brambles, and native habitat, plus a 3500 gallon rainwater catchment system, a sunroom heating the house, and a small detached bungalow to increase residential density.

Nice lens, Permafrog. What do you grow in your urban garden? How much space do you have? How do you handle pests and weeds? What's your favorite story about coming home from work and eating from the garden instead of takeout? I'd love to know more about how you make it work in your life. Posted June 03, 2007 |

Hey! I was excited to stumble across this lens. Are you going to write more--maybe about your experiences in urban permaculture? How is it working for you? What have you learned? Have you run across any pitfalls the rest of us might avoid thanks to your experience? Posted May 31, 2007 |
