Urban Style and urban subculture

Urban style is without clear definition. The term is often used as a marketing label in such diverse fields as garden styling, fashion and interior design as well as architecture and art. Urban style penetrates all areas of living and it seems almost anything can be labled as "urban style" meantime. Finding a definition of urban style seems impossible.

The origin of so called urban style is found in urban subcultures of graffiti,break dance, hip hop,punk skating and parkour..
Urban style could be described as and ever changing design movement influenced by urban life. Urban style is different in each region, country and city. The only common denominator is the urban source of inspiration routed in low brow and alternative culture. The drive and energy comes from the street, the authentic sources are non-commercial or anti-commercial. The market reacts on these impulses and embraces the creative potential trying to exploit it as much and as long as possible with the consequence that the style manufactured in masses is more or less quickly worn off. Urban style is highly indicidualistic, another means to escape from commercialised mainstream uniformity or pseudo hipness.

True urban style seems always in movement and ahead of the industry to evade the basis of commercialisation. Urban style therefore does not consist of a defined, static set of characteristics or accessoiries.
