ans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, was first published in 1837. In Andersen's original tale, The Little Mermaid wanted to marry a handsome prince she fell in love with and also coveted the eternal soul of a human (unlike the eventual fate of merfolk who turn to sea foam when they die). Knowing she could only get these by becoming human, she visited the Sea Witch to buy a potion giving her legs in exchange for her voice. The potion gave her legs, but walking was as painful as walking on knives and her feet bled horribly. She only won a soul if the prince loved and married her: If he didn't she would die and disintegrate into sea foam. In the original story, the little mermaid drank the potion, got legs and married the prince, even though he enjoyed watching her dance which pained her greatly.
Once married to the prince, the little mermaid's heart broke. She lamented all the physical pain and everything she gave up to become human. Her sisters traded their long hair for a knife from the Sea Witch. If the little mermaid killed the prince with this knife and let his blood flow onto her feet she could become a mermaid again. Unable to bring herself to kill the prince, the little mermaid threw herself into the ocean where she initially disintegrated into sea foam, but then her spirit rose from the water as she was nonetheless granted a human soul from her pure spirit and desire for a soul.
The original Sea Witch of Hans Christian Andersen was nameless and neutral, far from the villainous Ursula..

The bronze statue of The Little Mermaid or "Den Lille Havfrue" is located in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was commissioned in honor of the story's author, Hans Christian Andersen, and is approximately a 10-minute walk from the port of Langelinie in the direction of Amalienborg Palace. The statue was commissioned in 1909 and unveiled in 1913.

Pat Carroll provides the voice for both cecaelias Ursula and Morgana in the Disney Little Mermaid movies. She also played Shirley's mother on Laverne & Shirley (a 1970s US TV show).'In the photo, Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel) is posing with Pat Carroll.

A Pregnant Sea Witch Costume?
While checking blog posts related to Ursula the Sea Witch, I happened across this one from Appeal to Authority.In it they liken a pregnant Heidi Klum to Ursula, the Sea Witch from the Little Mermaid. Upon seeing the photo, I must say the comparison fits in a weird sort of way!
Ursula would be a great Halloween costume for a pregnant woman.

- its amazing the things you can read on Squidoo! enjoyed reading about this, didn't know the ins and outs on this character. I even chose Ursula as my favorite villain as shes entertaining in the movie moreover the others, she just isn't so dark.
