US Open History

The US Open is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world, and has its roots in a Rhodes Island tennis tournament first contested in 1881 by the male members of several exclusive American tennis clubs. In 1887 a Parallel women's tournament was started in Philadelphia.

In 1968 the various championships were united into the US Open, with professionals allowed to participate for the first time. The tournament was initially hosted on lawn courts at Forest Hill tennis center, before moving onto clay in 1973. The transition from clay to hard courts took place in 1978 when the US Open relocated to Flushing Meadows.

Hi,

I really enjoyed this lens. Very informative and entertaining... I mean, ANDRE AGASSI WITH HAIR?! And look how young Sampras is in that photo! Incredible stuff.

If you get the opportunity, check out my friend's blog about Wilson Tennis Racquets. It's still quite new but we will be adding some very useful content over time.

Great lens you've got there, I'm not generally much of a fan of tennis but found myself glued to the Andy Murray Wimbledon games (being British I've been very pleased with his progress over the past few years!) I didn't catch any of the US Open, it was a shame Murray lost out in the final though... it's been a while since we won anything tennis-wise (or had anyone particularly decent at the sport for that matter.) Anyway, I digress; like I say, I really enjoyed your lens and roll on The US Open 2009!

Roger Federer

GingerAlly says:

Hmm, well Federer seem to be tired, by but I think he is going to come back with a vengeance!

Rafael Nadal

Wordilydoc says:

I think at this point Nadal is the hungrier of the two and therefore he is working much harder. It could also be that Federer needs some rest since he has been playing so long without a break. However, that doesn't take anything from Nadal, he is a great athlete and he continues to show that.
