One of two grand slam tournaments played on hard court surfaces, the US Open is hosted by the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. It is one of the richest tournaments in tennis, offering a total prize fund in excess of $20 million. Both the men's and women's singles US Open draws attract a field of 128 players, with players also contesting titles for doubles, mixed doubles, seniors and juniors.

The 2009 US Open tennis tournament was a grand slam of note, with tennis giants Serena Williams and Roger Federer falling at the hands of underdog entries. The 2009 US Open draw promises to provide tennis fans with hours of gripping tennis action. In the men's draw all eyes will be on Juan Martin Del Potro and Roger Federer.

Hard courts have proven to be the great leveller in international tennis over the last two seasons, and this means that tennis fans are not only likely to witness a number of matches going to the maximum number of sets, but are also likely to witness a number of upsets as up-and-coming players look to take advantage of the end-of-season fatigue of the top seeds.

Players to Watch

Andy Murray: Andy Murray's progress at the US Open will be of much interest to British fans. The Scot came close to making his Grand Slam breakthrough at the 2009 tournament and could go a long way in the tournament with an additional year of experience beneath his belt.

Serena Williams: Serena Williams will go in pursuit of her second hard court Grand Slam title at the US Open. The defending champion appears to be developing into an ever more formidable player as she ages, and there's little doubt that she'll be the player to beat in the womens' draw at the US Open.

"I've been working so hard all year. Sometimes I wake up at 6 a.m. to go and practice and it's too dark, and I wait until it gets light. No one really, really knows the work an athlete puts in. But it's all worth it. It's all paying off. I feel like gosh, I've been working the hardest, so I should win."

2008 US Open Highlights

The 2008 US Open was defined by outstanding tennis, some outrageous upsets in the early rounds of the tournament and adverse weather conditions created by the remnants of Hurricane Hannah, which caused numerous schedule disruptions and resulted in the event being extended by a day to accommodate the mens' final.

However, it was Roger Federer's brilliant performance in the mens' singles final that lit up the tournament. Federer came up against Andy Murray in the final after coming through several tough tests in earlier rounds, and went on to produce an almost flawless performance to defeat the young Scot in straight sets and take his 5th consecutive US Open title.
