An Introduction To California

California is the most populous state in the United States and it is also the third largest in area. Only Alaska and Texas are larger.

California lies on the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by Oregon in the north, Nevada and Arizona in the east, Mexico in the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

The landscape changes from the beaches in the west, swiftly rising to the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. In the winter it's possible to go both surfing ans skiing in the same day. Mount Whitney is the highest mountain peak in the United States outside of Alaska. In the north of the state, in Redwood National Park, you can see the world's tallest tree, which is about 370 feet in height. As well as the mountain ranges, California also shares Death Valley, which is the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere, with Nevada.

California is also famous for the Napa Valley, which is one of the main wine growing regions in the USA.

The state of California has so much history and so much to see. It was in 1849 that gold was discovered in the state, culminating in the Gold Rush. You have the historic cities of San Francisco in the north with it's famous Alcatraz Prison, Los Angeles in the south with it's suburbs of Hollywood, home of the movie industry, and Anaheim, home of Disneyland. Further south San Diego and it's world famous zoo. Then the beaches, "California GIrls", surfing, skiing in the mountains. There is probably more to do in the state of California than in any other state.

California is indeed a beautiful area of the United States. Beaches, sand, and sunshine. I really enjoyed visiting Utah when we went through the United States so think that I am going to head over that direction in your articles and see what you have discovered on that area ;)

Love California! moved here after visiting my aunt when I was 19. Never wanted to leave after that. Even after moving around all over the world, came back here. I've lived all over the state too, but love Southern California the best!

I enjoyed this lens, Tony. I have relatives living in California and I consider it my second home. Looks like I should write a bit about my 2nd home and add it to your lens. I will when time permits.

This is an awesome lens. I just love California, Tony! We've spent a lot of time there from San Diego up to the Northern California redwoods. I've lensrolled this to my Mendocino County lens. Mendocino County is great wine country, too. Also, Sonoma County has wonderful Pinot Noirs...the climate is perfect there for pinot noir grapes.

A little tip - I happen to know another lensmaster gets quite a few Amazon sales with the Fodors Travel Guides - you may want to include them on your Amazon modules on these lenses.

What I most like about California is this state's climate diversity - from Mediterranean-like to high mountains' (and I'm a big fan of both).

What I like the most about this lens is what you put in the frame in the guest book module - very neat!! Great job as always, all stars... :)

Although I love California as a whole, I gotta say that I am a die hard Los Angelino. Southern Cal is where it's at and besides going a little north to the Santa Barbars and Santa Cruz areas, I'm not all that big on Northern California. Whether you know it or not, there are actually factions of people who would like to split California into 3 states...Southern, Central, and Northern. Ingeniously moronic in my opinion. Great lens on my state.

Great lens. I have spent far more time in California than any other state, having worked for a Silicon Valley company for 15 years. I made annual pilgrimages to head-office for a week or two, usually spending a weekend in San Francisco each time.
