The US Coast Guard on Squidoo

The Coast Guard is the nations oldest continuous seagoing service.  Founded in 1789 by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton to prevent smuggling, it has gone through many changes. As the world has changed, so has the Coast Guard.  Today over 40,000 Coast Guard men and women serve around the globe.  Their missions range from combating terrorism to saving lives to combating smuggling.  With the motto of Semper Paratus - Always Ready, they truly are always ready to go the distance to serve their country.  My goal is that through this lens, you will learn more about these men and woman, and appreciate the job they do for our country.

The Coast Guard Hymn

or words to that effect

Like most everyone, I'd never heard The Coast Guard Hymn until I was in boot camp. I loved to sing it in chapel services and thought it would be a wonderful addition to this site. Then I started looking for it.

It turns out that there are several versions. It is apparently based primarily on a song called Eternal Father, Strong to Save, which is unofficially known as "The Navy Hymn".

After looking it over, I knew it wasn't the same song I remember from so long ago. Finally, I tracked down what I believe is the version we sang in chapel so many years ago.

THE COAST GUARD HYMN

Eternal Father, Lord of hosts,
Watch o'er the men who guard our coasts.
Protect them from the raging seas
And give them light and life and peace.
Grant them from thy great throne above
The shield and shelter of thy love.

O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy word,
Who walked'st on the foaming deep,
and calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea!

Lord, guard and guide the men who fly
Through the great spaces in the sky,
Be with them always in the air,
In dark'ning storms or sunlight fair.
O, Hear us when we lift our prayer,
For those in peril in the air.

Action/Adventure Movies

If the Coast Guard adventure interests you, you might like these adventure movies. While they aren't about the Coast Guard, they are some very good movies.

001- Blood Diamond

Set during Sierra Leone's bloody civil war in 1999, this thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Danny Archer, a smuggler who sells "blood" diamonds used to finance terrorists. When Archer meets a local fisherman (Djimon Hounsou) whose son has been forced into a child army, the two men's lives become intertwined, and they set off on an adventure that leads them through the world's major diamond centers. DiCaprio and Hounsou earned Oscar nods for their performances.
002- Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Marriage has gotten stale for John and Jane Smith (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie), a husband and wife who don't yet know that they share the same undercover line of work: They're both guns for hire. Hiding their occupations has never been a hardship for either of them … until they discover that their next assignment involves them targeting each other! Can they go through with their respective missions, or will love prevail?
003- Casino Royale

Martin Campbell (GoldenEye) directs this film adaptation (the 21st of the Bond franchise) of Ian Fleming's first novel. Daniel Craig debuts as the new Bond who takes on a corrupt financier (Mads Mikkelsen) in a showdown of Texas Hold 'Em. You'll learn Bond's back story as the action-packed film takes you to the Bahamas, Madagascar and other exotic locales. Eva Green stars as Vesper Lynd, and the sublime Judi Dench reprises her role as M.
004- Inside Man

Dispatched to a crime scene where a bank robbery is in progress, police detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) hopes to apprehend the cunning thief (Clive Owen) so he can make his case for a promotion. But when a savvy negotiator (Jodie Foster) with questionable motives arrives on the scene, an already unstable situation threatens to implode. Spike Lee directs this tense action-drama co-starring Willem Dafoe and Christopher Plummer.
005- National Treasure

Modern treasure hunters, led by archaeologist Ben Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage), search for a treasure chest rumored to have been stashed away by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin as funds for the Revolutionary War. The whereabouts of the chest may lie in a secret code embedded in the U.S. Constitution and in a map drawn on the back of the Declaration of Independence. Co-stars Diane Kruger, Sean Bean and Harvey Keitel.
