Used Cell Phone Benefits
There are a number of reasons that people choose to buy a cell phone that is used or refurbished from third party vendors as opposed to purchasing a new phone from their cellular service provider. This lens outlines a few of those benefits.
Why Buy a Used Cell Phone?
When it comes time to replace your cell phone, you should strongly consider investigating the great deals that can be had in the used or refurbished cell phone market. Beyond the cost savings, there are several benefits to purchasing a used phone.1) No contracts Cellular providers are able to offer phones at cheaper rates because they force you to sign two year contracts when you buy a phone from them. At first the deal on the phone seems good, but when you consider the amount of money they charge you when you need to break your contract (perhaps you move to a place with bad coverage or get married and want to save some money with a "family plan"), the initial savings are often not realized. When you buy a phone from a third party, you aren't forced to sign a new contract and have the freedom to move in and out of cellular plans as you see fit.
2) More variety Most cellular service providers carry a limited selection and inventory of new phones at their stores and kiosks. With the ability to unlock almost any phone to operate on any network, your variety in the used cell phone market is much, much greater. This allows you to get exactly the phone you want with the exact features you want. If you want a lot of bells and whistles, maybe a used blackberry or used palm treo are the way to go. Or, if you use your cell phone for emergencies only and just need one to make calls, then you can find a great deal on a used phone that is very basic.
3) Cheaper Overseas Travelling If you're the kind of person that travels internationally a lot, then a used unlocked cell phone is definitely something you would be interested in. The problem with being locked to one particular network (by purchashing from a cellular service provider) is that they charge you huge international roaming fees to make or accept calls while out of the country. If you happen to purchase something like a used palm treo that is unlocked, you have the freedom to operate on any network you want by changing the SIM card in the phone. Thus, when you travel overseas, you can buy a prepaid SIM card made to operate on one of the networks in your destination country. Simply insert the SIM card in your phone while you're overseas and you'll operate on their network without having to pay the huge international roaming fees.
4) Cost Finally, you can generally get "more bang for your buck" when purchasing a used phone. Popular models of used blackberry and other smart phones can be found in the used and refurbished market for much cheaper than you can find them through cellular providers.
There are several more benefits to going used with your next phone. Reusing phones also reduces the amount of toxic waste our society produces, which is certainly a good thing considering the growing awareness of being environmentally conscious.

More About the Benefits of Used Cell Phones
Used cell phones are an excellent way to save money, and still own the cell phone you've always wanted. While a used Verizon Wireless phone has been owned and used before, most used cell phones are sold by their original owner, and have only been used by one previous person. You can often find used cell phones in great conditions, especially if you take the time to look around for exactly what you want.
The most obvious reason to get a used phone is to save money. Full retail prices for cell phones are borderline ridiculous and getting a deal often means you have to sign a new contract with a provider that locks you in to their service for a number of years. Some popular models are being sold for over $500! For most people, that is far more money than they'd care to spend on a cell phone, so looking for the same phone in the used market is a great alternative.
Buying a used phone, however, eliminates the hefty price tag. Granted, the phone will not be shiny new out of the box, but it will be perfectly functional and, most importantly, won't stretch your budget. Used cell phones are especially great for people that either want to always have the "latest and greatest" in cell phone technology (yeah, you can find those used as well) or for people that lose or break their phones regularly. Replacing with used phones can literally save you thousands of dollars over a number of years, so when your phone needs to be replaced, don't forget to look at the used market!

- I have bought my last three cell phones from ebay. One was a used blackberry, one a palm treo, and the other a nokia. The cost was very reasonable, but best of all I didn't have to deal with all the restrictions the cell providers charged.
