Used Mopeds
You may have decided to buy yourself a moped. They are great on gas, relatively inexpensive to purchase when compared to a car or even motorcycle and they are a stylish way to get around town. You can find advertisements for used mopeds in your newspaper classifieds and online. If you are purchasing a used moped, here are some tips and guidelines as to what you should look for and be aware of:
- First, start out by checking the engine. Does the moped start easily? If it does not start, or hesitates, it could be a problem with the fuel or spark. The carburetor, and gas tank and lines may need cleaning. Check the spark plug and wire, and look over the entire ignition system. You should see no loose wire, electrical tape holding things together or other clues of careless repairs. Look the engine over and make sure that it is clean and that the nuts and bolts are in good shape.
- Check to make sure that the lights work and that the handlebar switches work.
- Check all cables. If they are adjusted to the max, they are stretched out and need to be replaces.
- Check tires, brakes and chains (chains need to be tight and have pointy teeth).
- Check to see that the front forks are straight by eyeballing them from the front and by sitting on the used moped and looking down.
- Take the moped for a quick test drive on flat ground and inclines (make sure it's good and warmed up first). Check to see how the alignment feels.
- Check the clutch out during your test drive to make sure it doesn't slip.
- When you're done with your test drive, turn the engine off and wait a few minutes to check for leaks or drips.
- Finally, check out the appearance of the used moped. Is it up to par?
Buying a used moped could be a great investment, and a nice used moped can still be fairly cheap to buy. If you inspect it, and it's not up to par, but you're good mechanically, offer a lower price and repair it yourself. If you are going to have to spend quite a bit to get it to run properly and look decent, walk away from it. There are plenty of good used mopeds out there.
