Used Neon Bar Signs
After looking for cool neon signs, I started looking around the internet and pricing them so I could buy one for a friend of mine. I found a stark difference in prices and thought I'd make a post in case anyone else is looking for some cheap neon signs.
My friend is a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys, which is interesting to me since she's not from Texas and has never went to school there. I think she just says she's a fan to T off her home-towner L.A. 49ers. I guess they are/were football rivals. But I digress. She's really into Cowboys merchandise like posters, jerseys, hats, photos, etc. so I figured I'd get her a relatively inexpensive Dallas Cowboys neon bar sign. (By the way, no, I'm into her, she just got me a sweet birthday gift and now I'm forced into getting her a guilt gift).
Anyway I looked on a few sites online and found out that new neon Cowboys signs were going for like $200-$500 after shipping. I checked out shopwiki and the prices there were similar. I found a helmet neon on Amazon for like $65 bucks but it looked liked a cheap looking sign to me. All of the professional looking signs seemed too expensive, so I figured I'd just her a few Cowboys DVDs or something.
It occured to me though I should just get her a used neon bar signs (duh). I usually don't buy used stuff new because as my family says about anything used "someone probably died in/on/under/with that". So I checked out used neon signs and I found on ebay a blue Dallas Cowboy double star with "cowboys" in tubing underneath (similar but not exacly like the photo here) for about $40 after shipping. I figure heck, for a professionally looking neon sign like this, if somebody died on it, I'm sorry, but 40 bucks is a steal. So I received it a week later and it's actually pretty cool. She hung it told me she loves it! So if anyone's looking for a cool semi-inexpensive gift, check out ebay for used neon signs.
Oh, just a couple of things to consider.
Neon signs generally use more electricity, so if you get a large one, don't have it on 24/7.
If you want it to hang outside, make sure it's not an indoor only sign. It can screw up the tubing if you get certain makes wet.
Neon signs are heavy and may need to hang on a chain.
