Buying Tips For Used Campers
Things to consider when looking for a used camper
Mechanic - Get a trusted mechanic to give the engine and general mechanics thorough check over
Oil - Make sure it is not burned or full of additives to mask engine seal leaks
Batteries - They should be able to start the engine with little effort. House batteries that provide power to all the internal electrical systems should hold their charge and not have corroded terminals. Check that solar panels are putting
charge back into the batteries.
Rust - Watch out for small rust spots, make sure that they are not extended nor that they have been painted over. If the frame is rusted then forget it. This means that the camper is nearing the end of its life.
Propane System - check the propane lines, tanks and regulator.
Toilet - Make sure the toilet is holding water and not leaking. This will prevent fumes from coming back into the bathroom.
Floor and Ceiling - Check for damp patches in the carpet or on the ceiling. Soft spots under the carpet indicate a leaking water system and though repairable the damage already done should be assessed. Damp on the ceiling is a sign of a leaky roof which can be difficult to repair.
Heating And Air Conditioning - The heating system should not only be able to blow hot air to all parts of the living area but should also heat the water. The air conditioner should be able to blow cold air constantly.
General - heck all doors, windows, vents, lockers and cupboards. Switch on and off all appliances to test them, check all lights both inside and out.
Paperwork - Check that the VIN number matches that on the vehicle itself. Ask to see proof of any maintenance undertaken and and service records. See how many previous owners there have been.
