Used Office Funritue

This lens will deal with information on the process of buying and selling used office furniture. It is very much a work in progress.

Buy or Rent a Furnished space

The fastest and easiest way to get furniture for your company is to buy or rent a space that is already furnished.  If you are working with a good commercial real estate agent, ask them to show you spaces that still occupied where there is an option you can buy the existing furniture from the current tenant.

With this option, the existing tenant will be happy not to have to deal with moving or selling their furniture to a liquidator, and you can get an extremely reasonable price on your furniture.

Find a Bankruptcy or an Auction

Find another business that is going out of a space and buy their furniture as they are leaving.  When this can work, it can work well.  Be prepared to handle a lot of logistics to make it work.  You will need to hire furniture movers to take apart and move the furniture out of the existing space, rent a trailer or storage space until you are ready for your move, hire the mover again to move you in and then hire an installation crew to set up your space.  Ideally, going this route you would have someone to manage the process full time for a month or two.

Some issues here include:

The time you will be investing in this project is time you will not be spending on your business.

If you have to much product you will now need to sell or discard it.

If you need more product, you will need to locate a source for that.

The logistics can be quite involved.

Used Office Furniture from Ebay

Ebay and Craigslist can often be excellent sources for used office furniture for your business. If you are looking for 1 Herman Miller Aeron chair or a file cabinet, you can often find it here. The one caveat is that Ebay sellers make a deal to ship their products. If you are looking for a group of cubicles or some product that requires installation, Ebay sellers may or may not be able to provide you with the services you need. With Craigslist, make sure to discuss shipping arangements before any agreement is reached.

As this develops, I would like to include links to furniture recycling resources throughout the web. For now this section (like the rest of this lenses) is still a work in progress.
