Cotton is the Fabric of the World, Just Make Mine Organic
Can you imagine a world without cotton? To bring this delicate plant to harvest, it is heavily sprayed with pesticides that are so poisonous they gradually render fields barren. To finish off the process, fabrics are colored with toxic dyes and finished with formaldehyde.
90 million acres are devoted to the production of cotton worldwide, consuming 25% of all pesticides used on our planet. Only about 10% of these applied chemicals actually work, the rest are lost in wind drift, the water run off, and in our birds, animals and humans. Genetically modified seed accounts for 50% of the cotton grown in the United Stales. Petroleum based hydrocarbons, chemical fertilizers are intensively applied to the cotton crops to speed up and enhance the plant's growth cycle and productivity. Over 8,000 chemicals are used to turn the raw material into our everyday products. It takes 1/3 lb of chemicals to make a conventional sheet set.Organic cotton is made from start to finish with no toxic chemicals used. As parents we are responsible to protect our children from these toxic elements in her environments. Use pure soft organic cotton to wrap your baby in. For more on organic products see Organics
Today, too many of us shop for clothes at our local Big Box store, appreciating the low price without realizing the true cost of what we buy. When we lose our connection to where our clothes come from, it is easy to forget the difference our fiber choices make. In choosing items that support and sustain life, we nourish ourselves, our families, and the world around us.Conventional cotton production uses vast quantities of pesticides -- perhaps even more pesticides than any other crop. Learning this helped us understand the strongly negative impact pesticides have on farmers and their land, and on the workers who handle the fibers and transform them into our clothing.
We then started wondering if our clothes were posing any dangers to our health, even joking that there should be Surgeon General warnings on the garment tags! We deliberately dressed our children in hand-me-downs, not only to save money but also hoping that some of the chemicals had been washed away. And we started to notice the smell at the fabric store and how it made us feel slightly sick. We knew there had to be a better way, and started our search for organics. These are what we found for organic items: Organic Clothing
