The Very Many Uses for Eggshells
Ranked #197 in Healthy Living, #4,784 overall
What You Can Do With The Shell After You Use The Egg
I recycle, reuse and repurpose as much as I can to prevent things from going into the landfills. I do this for economic reasons also. There are many ways egg shells can be utilized. Some are more suited for industrial uses and others can be done by anyone at home. Egg shells can be made into food supplements for people and animals. Art projects galore include egg shells as an ingredient . From mosaics, paints, paper mache, dying, carving and decoupage eggshells have been used by many artisans and craft people for many years. This lens is trying to introduce you to ways you might never have thought of before.
Uses Of Egg Shells
Egg shells can be used in art, nutrition, building material and many other things.
Eggshells are composed of around 95% calcium carbonate, a mineral that is very important for industry, nutrition and agriculture. There are many studies trying to find new ways to utilize this resource. With their natural absorbent properties, they are being looked at for treating cadmium in waste water.
Powdered egg shells are used in animal feed and pet food, there are nutritional supplements that are composed of this mineral. Historically the shell of an egg has been used by some artists in the recipe for white pigment. Some young students have experimented with eggshells instead of sand in building hollow blocks, which has been used by individual builders in some areas. Some Caribbean islands are losing their protective beaches. Individuals are illegally taking large amount of sand to make cement for building hotels for the tourist industry. Using eggshells in place of the sand might be another option.
Artistic use of eggshells are many. Mosaics, carving, painting, decoupage and washi eggs to name a few. Crafters can make snow globes, use in terrariums, make miniature igloos, snow people and of course eggshell chalk. They can be used in home decor and as holiday ornaments
Some gardeners believe crushed up eggshells as a form of pesticide to kill slugs. They believe the shells act as abrasives and the jagged edges cut the slugs and they die. This is not considered generally effective so many people use diatomaceous earth (DE) for this problem. The DE for this purpose can be bought in a garden supply store and it is also used to kill roaches, bedbugs and other pests. Pool grade DE should not be used for this purpose and of course read the label.
Instead of lime for your plants you can use powdered eggshells for its calcium content as an inexpensive fertilizer and fungicide.
Eggshells can be put into a compost bin also but needs to be crushed or powdered in order to break down easier.

There are some people with egg allergies. It usually starts when they are infants and most outgrow it. Others do not and will have the allergy at different levels of severity lifelong. The allergy is mostly a protein allergy and is usually the whites and sometimes the yolk. Some manufacturers of eggshell supplements say there is little danger because the protein is not in a properly treated shell. But of course you can get your calcium from other sources. But if you are doing non edible things still be aware of the dangers.

Safety in Using Egg Shells
Caution With Salmonella and Dust
Soaking the shells in soap and hot water is one way but thorough cooking is known to kill the bacteria . When we handle raw chicken we are told to wash utensils and the cutting board with soap and hot water. The same precaution should be taken with raw eggs. It is suggested that a small amount of bleach be added to hot water and soak the shells in that, then let them air dry. One amount mentioned was approximately one tsp to a quart of hot water then rinse and let dry. Others say they always boil the egg shells. If the whole egg is totally boiled then than that takes care of the problem but if you separate and cook the eggs without cooking the shell you need to deal with the shell if you are going to use it. And of course good hand washing technique should always be used.

If you are carving eggshells it is prudent to wear a particulate mask or respirator and use some type of exhaust fan. Particulates can be breathed in and irritate the lungs. People can also have an allergic reaction to the dust. Particulates in large amounts can cause lung damage. This does not only apply to eggshells it applies to chalk dust, talcum, wood dust, spackle. etc. I go crazy when I see the home shows on television and watch them working without masks. Always wash the dust off you, your clothes and the work area.
Depending on what paints you use, also, if it has fumes wear a mask and either work outdoors or by an open window for circulation.
