#1 Move to Iowa

Let me explain...

Iowa is not just a peaceful state in the Midwest. And it is more than just the 29th state to join the Union. It is the land of opportunity for you.

This is because every 4 years the Presidential Primaries start here!

In 2008, Iowa was the home away from home to every political candidate of the major parties. It saw Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson, and all of the other candidates. They had offices, staff members, and millions of dollars riding on a successful start in Iowa. Often the momentum gained in Iowa leads you right to the Convention for the nomination!

So why does this matter? And why should you live there?

Well... If you live in Iowa and become apart of its landscape you in turn learn what is valuable to its citizens. You become one of them. Your home is there. Your kids are raised there. You have worked there.

This builds you a reputation in Iowa in which to build upon for the next steps...

Would you live in Iowa?

#2 Get Involved in a Party

Doesn't Matter which one...

Political Parties are a means by which politicians, voters, and platforms can be united. Under the banner of a political party politicians generally vote, and act upon the influence and platform (ideology) of the Party and Party officials.

Voters often choose who to vote for based upon which party the Politician is affiliated with and not always the ideals of the politician. This is especially evident in local and state elections where the politician campaigning is less recognizable to the voters.

The United States is a multi-party system, but favors two parties in particular. These political parties are the Republicans (Grand Old Party-GOP) and the Democratic Party. The majority of all legislatures and executive branch members on the national and state level are only from these two political parties.

The importance of getting involved in your party is to meet like-minded people that will help you in the future to get elected to different offices. This becomes important because the party is the life-blood to your early elections, and the only way to become President.

Ways to get involved

Help the party by volunteering to help your neighbors register to vote. Look for donations for local candidates and the party itself. Go to conventions on the state and local levels. Go to town hall meetings and other political meetings held by the party.

Ways to get involved II

Meet the leadership of the party through emails, phone calls, or personal visits. Know your local officials and candidates. Be of service to them. Meet State legislators and get involved in the issues they face.

Step #3 Become State Legislator

You have now moved to Iowa, and got involved in a political party. You have volunteered in the party, maybe even led a caucus meeting or ran for something small like the town dogcatcher. Maybe you just read the minutes at local meetings of your political party. But you have begun to make a name for yourself.

People by now should know you as a neighbor, friend, and responsible member of the (______) party. This involvement has also given you a chance to learn about your political ideology and develop your opinions. Hopefully you have networked with party members as well.

Now is the first hard part. Unless you really loved your state before! You now have to get elected as a state legislator. This doesn't require experience, but does require connections and support. This wont be an easy step. You should focus on the House of Representatives or Assembly if you ares still young or not as well connected with party members. This is because there are more of these positions so the districts are smaller. Small districts mean that you need less money, fewer staff or volunteers, and less experience. Running for a state Senate position is going to be more difficult without greater resources financially and supportively.

With your situation evaluated and your decision made on whether you are going to run for the House of Representatives/Assembly or Senate you are ready to begin campaigning.

Step #4 Become Governor

You have been a State Legislator now for a few years. At least 2 terms. You have proved you are capable and that you are determined to help the state. You have also now been apart of important committees within the State Legislature that have taught you about the intricacies of different state issues. You now also have relationships with interest groups, legislators, and other politicians and party leaders in the state.

This is your chance now to become Governor and gain valuable and relevant executive experience. So prepare well, fund raise heartily and go for it. You'll need to follow the same steps in my Campaign Tips page that you followed to become a State Legislator. This will require more money, more support, and a very good campaign manager. You will also be required to have a different image then you did when you were a legislator. You will in large effect be the leader of your state's party and as such you will need to unite the party.

Step #5 Write a National Best-Seller

Whether you write it yourself or not, being published is a big step that you must take.

So you have followed all of the other steps to become the President of the United States up to this point. You have some great ties to your party, legislative and now executive experience. Next you need to write a novel. It can be about your ideology, history, yourself, experiences, or almost anything. You do not even have to write it yourself. Get a ghost writer, good editor, or something that will co-author it for you. It is also a great way to begin to really hone your skills for making stories and experiences memorable and concise.

A great example is Barack Obama's recent book, "The Audacity of Hope". It helped to propel President Obama into the "limelight" and moved his political career forward at an alarming rate. It also gave the future President a generous financial increase that helps to cushion the expensive run for office.

This was an interesting way to make a lens about being a president. You gave me another way how today politicians use certain ways of becoming president. New way to look at a wannabe president's strategy.

I would say another step to becoming President is to run your campaign on nothing, just like Obama did. What did he run on, change, well who isn't for change, that's why people run for Pres., to change something.
