USS Enterprise~Aircraft Carrier

The USS Enterprise is the oldest aircraft carrier in the US fleet, having been launched in 1960. She was the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier in the world. Eight nuclear reactors supply her power and she is the only carrier with this configuration. USS Enterprise was meant to be the first of the Enterprise Class but she was the only one built.
The navy may be downsizing the carrier fleet from 11 to 9. The Enterprise is scheduled for decommissioning in 2014 but this date is dependent on when her nuclear fuel supply is spent and when the USS Gerald Ford is completed.

One nickname of the USS Enterprise is "The Big E."

Enterprise Sailors help in Haiti

USS Enterprise sends sailors to help with Haiti relief effort

According to navy.mil, the USS Carl Vinson has sent 47 sailors to help with relief efforts following the 7.0 earthquake in Haiti on January, 12, 2010. Eleven of the sailors are French-Creole speakers and will serve as interpreters on the hospital ship, USNS Comfort. Included in the group are air traffic controllers, aviation boatswain's mates, ship's servicemen, information systems technicians and several sailors from various specialties. Even though the call gave them short notice, the response from volunteers was overwhelming.

More reading about the USS Enterprise

USS Enterprise Establishes Command IA Program Early
Before the Navy's Command Individual Augmentee Coordinator (CIAC) program was implemented, USS Enterprise (CVN 65) created its own program to better support its individual augmentee (IA) Sailors and their families before, during and after their deployments.

Sailors who go on an IA tour leave their families and parent command to provide key and critical skills to the overall warfighting effort while the CIAC provides a valuable direct line keeping a connection to the IA Sailor, their parent command and the Sailor's family.
Enterprise Completes Second Phase of Crew Certification
The crew of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) passed phase two of the Crew Certification Process (Crew Cert) Sept. 1 in preparation for getting the ship out of the shipyards and back underway.

The purpose of Crew Cert is to ensure the ship's Sailors are knowledgeable of the fundamentals of shipboard life and have a baseline level of knowledge that can be applied across all ratings.
USS Enterprise Sailors Move Back on the Ship
This is a video showing the sailors moving back on to the USS Enterprise. The Enterprise is in dry dock and preparing to rejoin the fleet.
The history of the aircraft carrier
The very first ship to become fully converted with a full-length landing deck was the HMS Argus in 1918, although the first purpose-built aircraft carrier - HMS Hermes - did not begin service until 1923. Although it was begun in 1918, the numerous tests, experiments and financial considerations delayed its appearance for several years, allowing the Imperial Japanese Navy to fully commission its Hosho carrier a year earlier in 1922, despite the fact that many of its design features had been inspired by the more slowly emerging Hermes.

So glad to see Enterprise in your lens list. I am proud (maybe a little too proud, LOL) of having worked on her during my years as an outside machinist. After working aboard submarines in tight quarters, the elbow room was a delight. We were replacing some large valves in a radiation area, and it was quite a bit easier than what I was accustomed to. We civilian service workers were invited to dine in the officer's mess, and I remember being amazed at how good the food was.

Thanks for some great memories. Enterprise is a grand lady of the sea, and I enjoyed this lens about her very, very much.
