PERSIAN GULF (March 17, 2008) Aviation Boatswain's Mate Handling 3rd Class Alex Dieringer holds a screech owl that was found on the flight deck of the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). The owl was discovered in the left-main wheel well of an F/A 18 Hornet during a pre-flight inspection of the aircraft during flight operations aboard the carrier. They were looking for Foreign Object Debris, thus the name FOD.

A screech owl that was found on the flight deck of the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), rests on the cable of a sound powered telephone in the flight deck control center of the carrier. The owl was discovered in the left-main wheel well of an F/A 18 Hornet during a pre-flight inspection of the aircraft.

While underway, the ship has its own daily newspaper, the "Give 'em Hell Herald", and its own weekly television newscast, "Synergy".

On 1 September 2005, in response to Hurricane Katrina, Harry S. Truman set sail for the devastated U.S. Gulf Coast. Truman arrived in the Gulf of Mexico on 4 September and served as the flagship for the Naval task force. The ship anchored in the gulf and provided fresh desalinated water for the relief effort via helicopter.

The massive storm covered much of the Gulf of Mexico, spanning from the U.S. coast to the Yucatan Peninsula.

Distillation plant capacity: 400,000 gals (enough to serve 2000 homes). Aircraft carriers can make fresh drinking water from salt water.

"Reactor Department is HST's third largest department. Four hundred highly skilled and motivated officers, chief petty officers and Sailors operate our two nuclear propulsion plants, providing steam for ship's propulsion, catapult operations, and electric power generation. In addition to producing and distributing the ship's supply of fresh water, Reactor Department also provides steam through an independent system for heating, laundry and galley services."
