June 12, 2009: Off the coast of the Philippines, near Subic Bay, a a Chinese submarine hit an underwater sonar array being towed by the destroyer USS John McCain. The incident was described as an "inadvertent encounter".

Though the array was damaged, the sub and destroyer did not collide. A sonar array is towed behind ships and is used to listen to and locate underwater sounds.
