USS Ronald Reagan

After the devastating 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan, the USS Ronald Reagan was off the coast of Japan delivering humanitarian aid.

The insignia of the USS Ronald Reagan was designed by her plank owners with historical assistance from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Foundation. Plank owners are the sailors that were stationed on the Reagan during her building and commissioning. This is a quite symbolic insignia. On March 4, 2001, the USS Ronald Reagan was christened by Reagan's wife Nancy. Nancy Reagan gave the ship's crew the traditional first order as an active unit of the Navy: "Man the ship and bring her to life." The sailors then would have run aboard the ship and manned the rails on the Reagan.
By this time Ronald Reagan had Alzheimer's Disease and did not attend the christening. He died eleven months later.

Nov. 25, 2008, Sailors man the rails on the flight deck of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) while the ship makes her way past Point Loma into her homeport of San Diego.
