The USS New York

What sets the USS New York apart? Its construction incorporates 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the ruins of the World Trade Center which fell on September 11, 2001, the victim of terrorist attack. The steel was melted down and poured into a mold to form the bow stem of the USS New York. The idea for using recovered steel from the World Trade Center is not credited to any one person but it is known that Governor George Pataki was instrumental in seeing that the steel made its way to the Amite Foundry and Machine, Inc., Amite, La., as a gift from the citizens of New York to the Navy.

The Naming of the USS New York

The 6th USS New York

On the day that terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center, this ship was on the drawing board but it was not yet named. Traditionally, state names are reserved for submarines but the state of New York requested that the name USS New York be given to this ship to honor those who died on September 11, 2001. It seems fitting given that the ship is constructed from World Trade Center steel. It seems particularly appropriate that this ship will be engaged in the war against terror.

This is the sixth ship bearing the name of New York. The other five have all been retired.

Navy Commissions USS New York in Big Apple
USS New York (LPD 21), the fifth San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, built with steel salvaged from the World Trade Center, was commissioned here Nov. 7 in a ceremony held in the shadow of the city for which it is named.

Calling USS New York a symbol of freedom similar to the Statue of Liberty, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus explained how this ship will be a reminder of what all New York and the nation went through on September 11th.

"Today, we witness the birth of another memorial to liberty. Eight years ago, this city witnessed the worst atrocities committed against our country. The New York will be a visible testimony to our resilience, to the character of this city, to the strength of this country," said Mabus.
A New US Navy Ship The USS New York
The USS New York is one of several ships in the San Antonio class of amphibious transport dock ships. They are designed to transport and land troops, supplies, and equipment such as amphibious vehicles and helicopters. Designated as LPD. It is one of three similar ships that are being built and being given names that are associated with The Attack on America. In addition to the USS New York, the USS Arlington will be named because of the location of the Pentagon, which was hit by American Airlines flight 77. The USS Somerset will be named after the county in Pennsylvania in which United flight 93 crashed after being taken over by hijackers.
PCU New York Receives Special Gift
The crew of the Pre-Commissioning Unit New York (LPD-21) received a special gift from the family of a sailor stationed aboard USS New York (BB-34).
The Reynolds family of Ocean Springs, Miss., donated the battleship's bugle to the LPD-21 crew. The bugle was used to sound reveille and taps aboard and was taken from the ship before it was used for bomb testing in 1946.

Little Did She Know - 9/11 Tribute

"Little Did She Know (She'd Kissed A Hero)" by Kristy Jackson We Will Never Forget After raising over $30,000 for 9/11 charities, we thought it time to put a video together of all the images and pictures during Kristy's visits to New York and New Jersey. Though there were many new friends made along the way, when choosing the pictures, we left many out because the pictures showed everyone smiling ... somehow that didn't seem to go with the music. We love you and you know who you are. We purposely left out the terrorist acts and the pictoral damage....it's about the victims and those families affected. Limited CD available still at www.kristyjackson.com. We will not be re-pressing.....

San Antonio Class ~ Amphibious Transport Dock Ships

The USS New York is the fifth ship in the San Antonio class of amphibious transport dock ships and designed to carry 360 sailors and 700 Marines.

According to the US Navy:

DID YOU KNOW?

"Helicopters and jets are not just on aircraft carriers. Today's amphibious ships are specially designed with a flight deck to support an array of transport and attack helicopters, as well as Harrier "Jump Jets." Some aircraft carry troops, cargo and supplies. Others perform defensive measures against submarines and/or any other type of land or sea military threat. Now, a whole battalion can leave the ship with all their supplies and equipment and land ashore without anything or anyone even getting wet!"

Quotes from New York Governor, George Pataki

About the USS New York

Governor George Pataki, Governor of New York, stated, "On September 2001, our nation's enemies brought their fight to New York... The USS New York will now bring the fight to our nation's enemies well into the future."
"The USS New York will ensure that all New Yorkers and the world will never forget the evil attacks of September 11, and the courage and compassion New Yorkers showed in response to terror," said Governor Pataki. "I want to thank Secretary England (Deputy Secretary of Defense) for taking this extraordinary step and agreeing to pay special tribute to all New Yorkers by giving our name to a ship that will play an important role in the war on terror," the Governor said.

The Navy will commission the newest San Antonio class amphibious transport dock ship New York (LPD 21), during an 11 a.m. EST ceremony Nov. 7, 2009, in New York City.

The ship is named New York in honor of the state and the courage and heroism of New Yorkers during and after the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. A unique characteristic of the ship is the use of 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center wreckage that was incorporated into the construction process
Future USS New York Sets Sail for the Big Apple
Future USS New York (LPD 21) left Naval Station Norfolk, Va., Oct. 29 to begin her four-day transit to New York City where the ship's commissioning ceremony is scheduled to take place on Nov. 7.

Part of the ship's mission is to return the 7.5 tons of steel recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers to its home.

"We're going to bring New York home," said Cmdr. Curt Jones, the ship's commanding officer. "The sacred steel in the bow of the ship will get to go home, and we're proud of that."
