USS PCE 884

This is a photo of the USS PCE 884 that my dad was on.

I'm no expert on this subject. It's something I was helping my dad with. Recently, he passed away and I am going to do what I can to continue with this project.

If you have information that would add to this subject, I would very much appreciate your contributions.

If you see something on this lens that is an error, please let me know.

Warmest regards,

Pat

Personal Stories

The photo on the right shows all that was left of the flag after riding out the worst storm to ever hit the Pacific! (Dad is in the center)

Click on the links below to read the story of the storm as experienced by two men on the USS PCE 884. Read both accounts of riding out the worst typhoon in Pacific history.

Riding out the Typhoon

The following 2 reports are written by different men (shipmates, one of which is my dad)about the same storm. We discovered the Culpepper report while doing a Google search for the USS PCE 884 looking for Dad's shipmates. The Culpepper report was posted by his daughter whom we contacted. Sadly Mr Culpepper had passed away a short time before.

You may have a hard time believing this story is true, but both stories report the same experience.

What a wonderful tribute. My father passed away only 2 weeks ago and he was a proud Navy man. I am looking for a picture of an LST 359, LST 3, or a PCE 884. If anyone reads this and has a photo of good quality of the entire ship please email me(djung@nemont.net) Thank You

The authoritative source is: Jane's Fighting Ships. Even though few people can afford it, some edition is available in most fair-sized libraries.

Mom's Letters Home
In 1944, my mother wanted to do something for the war effort. Her two brothers had joined the Army, and she felt she needed to make a contribution too. My mother decided to join the United States Marine Corps Womens Reserve, a non combat group that was intended to take over stateside jobs. The idea was that the women who joined would each free a combat trained male Marine to fight overseas.
Battleship USS Alabama
The US Navy battleship USS Alabama (BB-60) was launched from the Norfolk Navy Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia on February 16, 1942 and was commissioned on August 16 of that same year. In nearly five years of commissioned service, the USS Alabama earned nine battle stars for participation in the Atlantic and Pacific Campaigns of World War II. Today she is permanently berthed in the waters of Mobile Bay just outside the city of Mobile, Alabama where she serves proudly as a floating museum honoring the service of all veterans, past and present, of all branches of the US military.
