An Introduction to Uxbridge

Uxbridge is a medium sized town in the County of Middlesex, in the London Borough Of Hillingdon, approximately 15 miles West of Central London and only 5 miles from Heathrow Airport. It is believed to have existed since before the time of the Norman Conquest. It is served both by a number of bus routes and by the London Underground. It is also the home of West London's University, Brunel, named after the legendary civil engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It has two indoor shopping centres, located on the High Street, as well as a number of other High Street chain stores. Equally, it has more than its fair share of traditional English shops and - of course - pubs!

Uxbridge Underground Station

The main public transport gateway to and from the town

Uxbridge Underground StationThe Railway Station in Uxbridge is served by the London Underground service. Although Uxbridge and the next dozen or more stations along the track are actually above ground, they are still classed as being part of the underground network as opposed to the mainline network. It is the outermost stop on both the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines. Services are most frequent on the Metropolitan line, especially early in the morning and on Sundays.

Uxbridge Bus Station

A comprehensive service around Middlesex and beyond

Uxbridge Bus StationUxbridge Bus Station is situated immediately adjacent to the Railway Station, making it extremely convenient for any required onward journey. Bus services to local areas (including Heathrow Airport and the University of Brunel) are numerous and frequent. Easy to follow timetables - by bus or by destination - are prominently displayed at each stop and on the walls around the station.

The Pavilions Shopping Centre

Uxbridge High Street

The Pavilions Shopping Centre, UxbridgeThe Pavilions Shopping Centre can be found no more than a hundred yards from the Underground Station, to the right and across the street. It contains mostly - as one may expect - branches of national chain stores, but there are a few smaller, locally owned concerns. There is also a concourse within the shopping centre where stalls are set up at weekends, selling everything from budget towels and clothing, to freshly made crepes.

The Chimes Shopping Centre

Uxbridge High Street

The Chimes Shopping CentreThe Chimes Shopping Centre is even closer to the Underground Station than the Pavilions, but this time, to the left. It is similar to the Pavilions in size though it is split over two levels. The two centres afford approximately equal variety to shoppers, though with principally different stores, and each one has its own private car parking area.

Do You Have A Business In or Around Uxbridge?

Would you like to see it featured here?

I'm sure you would. After all, the Internet is the future in most respects and that certainly includes advertising!

It is my intention to develop this site and watch it grow over a considerable period of time. It will be kept up to date and relevant at all times and will be a source of information upon Uxbridge and its surrounding area. Do you want to be featured on it?

Consider how traditional advertising for your small business works. You pay a ridiculous amount of money to appear in the local newspaper for one week...and how many people actually read your advert? One in a thousand who picks up the paper? If you're lucky! The reality is that people are buying the newspaper for sports results, local news, or even the TV guide. They are not remotely interested in what product you are selling or what service you can provide for them. They find what they are looking for and then discard the paper, along with your advert.

Advertising on the Internet means that your ad is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to anyone searching for relevant products or services in a specific geographical area. This means that people who see your advert are a thousand times more likely to be the very people looking for your product or service.

Contact me today for more information and find out how I can feature your business on this site and help you make it grow.

So You Already Have Your Own Website, Do You?

Have you promoted and marketed it effectively, however?

There is so much more to creating a successful website or blog than that first initial step of creating it. You have to ensure people visit it, those whom you desired to target. Have you achieved that with your site?

Around Uxbridge - Past and Present

by Philip Sherwood

Around Uxbridge past & present

Written by local historian, Philip Sherwood, this book explores the history of Uxbridge through a whole series of pictures, both of the past and the present. Everything from the development of the road systems, to trade and industry, to the pubs are covered in this work.

Surely, a must have for long term residents and new residents alike.

St Margaret's Church

The oldest building in Uxbridge

St Margaret's Church, Uxbridge St Margaret's Parish Church is by far the oldest surviving building in Uxbridge, parts of the existing structure actually dating back to the 1300's. It is unfortunately now dwarved by many of the buildings round about but must have been quite an imposing structure in times long gone by. It is to be found at the top (town centre end) of Windsor Street and is a mere stone's throw away from Uxbridge Underground Station.

Click here for a much more detailed history of this ancient parish church.

Windsor Street

An older, quainter view of Uxbridge

Windsor Street, UxbridgeWindsor Street starts from the High Street at St Margaret's Church and proceeds in an approximately southerly direction. It is a short street but offers some of the more "quaint" shops and buildings in the town, most of which are more than worth the visitor's inspection. This is the street where one can best get a feel for "Olde Englande" in Central Uxbridge.

A Look at some of the Pubs on Windsor Street, Uxbridge

You may wish to give them a try

There are several very good pubs in Uxbridge but when I lived in the town, the two detailed below were the ones which I frequented most often, both to eat and to drink. I hope that if you happen to find yourself in Uxbridge, you will have the opportunity to give them a try for yourself.
Pub reviews: The Metropolitan, Uxbridge, Middlesex
The Metropolitan is a medium sized pub on Windsor Street, in the town of Uxbridge, Middlesex, in the West London Borough of Hillingdon. It attracts...,
Pub reviews: The Fig Tree, Uxbridge, Middlesex, UK
The Fig Tree is a large pub/restaurant, located on Windsor Street, very close to the centre of Uxbridge, Middlesex, in the London Borough of Hillingdon...

Brunel University

The University of West London

Brunel University Administration BlockThe University of Brunel is located on the outskirts of Uxbridge, no more than an easy fifteen minutes' straight walk from the Underground and Bus Stations. Buses travel in both directions on a frequent basis during the day. It has been on its present site for more than forty years and is named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the famous nineteenth century civil engineer, a statue of whom is prominently located within the University Campus.

Click here to visit the University's home page for further information about its history, campus, courses and lots more besides.

Are you a Student at Brunel University?...Or any other University, for that matter?

Do you experience problems in obtaining your necessary course books?

It is not cheap being a university student these days! Course books in particular seem to reaching incredible prices and prove a daunting - if necessary - drain on what are often extremely limited funds. Did you know, however, that Amazon sells a lot of these books at what are some times incredible bargain prices?

Click on the link relevant to you below, search the database at the top left of the screen which will subsequently open and find out how much you can save today. You may just get a very pleasant surprise!

The Grand Union Canal, Uxbridge

A throwback to a bygone era

The Grand Union Canal, UxbridgeThe Grand Union Canal flows through the Eastern edge of Uxbridge. Canals formed a huge part of the transport infrastructure of pre-20th Century Britain. They were essential for moving goods around the country but with the advent and growth of the railways, their growing demise was perhaps only to be expected. The Grand Union Canal in its present form, however, only came in to being in the 1920's, formed from an amalgamation of several smaller waterways. The canal may not now know the traffic it once did but it is still popular with pleasure cruisers and affords many a pleasant walk along its frequently leafy banks.
