V for Vendetta Cast and Crew

Natalie Portman stars as Evey. She has recently had a crucial role in the Star Wars prequels as Padme Amidala. She's also appeared in the films Mars Attacks, Closer, Free Zone, and Cold Mountain.

Hugo Weaving stars as V. He first became well known as Agent Smith in The Matrix movies, and next starred in another epic, as the elf Elrond in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

John Hurt stars as Chancellor Adam Sutler. His long career in film has more recently included the films Hellboy and Skeleton Key.

Stephen Rea plays Inspector Eric Finch. He has appeared in such films as Interview with the Vampire and The Crying Game.

Stephen Fry is the actor who plays Gordon Deitrich, and recently has narrated the Harry Potter movies.

V for Vendetta is directed by James McTiegue, first assistant director of Star Wars: Episode II, and The Matrix films written and directed by brothers Andy and Larry Wachowski. The Wachowski brothers wrote and produced V for Vendetta based on Alan Moore's comic book. (They themselves once wrote comics. I have some issues of Clive barker's Hellraiser with Wachowski stories). Due to a grievance with DC Comics, Moore had his name removed from the film, believing he was misled in what rights he signed over to DC when they first published V for Vendetta.

V for Vendetta Movie Review

V for Vendetta surprised me. The story revolves around alot of political ideology, and with it's steady pace sometimes sudden plot twists were a little disorientating at first. Yet still it was easy to follow and exciting. How could this be?

The main characters captivated me. I was compelled by their motivations and personal stories. I found something relative in them, and was in earnest anticipation of the events about to unfold.

Set in a future Britain ruled by a fascist government, the film begins on the eve of Guy Fawkes Day, on a fateful night when the anti-hero "V" (Hugo Weaving) interrupts two policemen's attempted sexual assault on a TV reporter named Evey (Natalie Portman) before he blows up the Old Bailey courtrooms.

Evey's saviour, V, is a caped revolutionary who masquerades in a Guy Fawkes mask. Fawkes, who tried to blow up British Parliament in 1605 is regarded as a traditional "psychotic" British hero by Alan Moore (The Killing Joke, Watchmen), who wrote the graphic novel this film is based on.

With Sith-like combat skill, V takes over state television to broadcast his manifesto. In his destructive escape from the police, he is saved from gunpoint by Evey who works at the station. In turn V ends up secreting Evey away to his secret lair. With it's sense of seclusion and sophistication it's very reminiscent of The Phantom of the Opera.

However, there is no romance blooming, as V affirms that the revolutionary ideals he represents and fights for, are all that he is. In fact, much to Evey's dismay V condemns her to his lair for the remaining year until next Guy Fawkes day when he plans to blow up Parliament.

Over the course of that year, V remains invincible as he assaults the dictatorship and unravels the intriguing plot threads that will lead to its demise, and reveal a destroyed relationship that helped make him what he is.

It's a film that develops the relevance of its characters and story with compelling momentum. The directorial debut of James McTeigue, it's visually and aurally engaging, with a typical but satisfactory film score by Oscar-nominated composer Dario Marianelli (Pride and Prejudice). Natalie Portman's performance is impressive. I especially admired her tasteful accent. Hugo Weaving managed a great masked performance with excellent phrasing and personality in his voice, and gestures that were always telling but never too much.

I was not only entertained, but thoughtfully engaged by it, and still am. Great movie. --GM

V for Vendetta Soundtrack on CD

Composed by Dario Marianelli whose Pride and Prejudice score earned him an Oscar nomination. He also composed Brothers Grimm for Terry Gilliam.

The score is not supercharged with relentless themes you'll never forget, but it definately has several stirring cues; I myself edited together different parts for a horse racing promo earlier this year for the Kentucky Derby.

This CD has a couple of songs from the movie as well by Julie London and Cat Power, and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture is part of the finale. Unfortunately it doesn't have the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man", which was electrifying over the films end credits.

Alan Moore Books and Films

Alan Moore is one of the most acclaimed comic book writers in the industry. His complex graphic novel Watchmen helped define a new sense of realism in comic books. He also penned The Killing Joke, which was the first Alan Moore comic book I ever read. One of the best and most mature Batman comics, it retells the Joker's transformation and shows how perverse he can be. V for Vendetta is not the only one of his works to have been adapted to screen. The Hughes brothers directed Johnny Depp in the Jack the Ripper film From Hell. A less admired screen version came about with the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. And Brazil director Terry Gilliam had long sought to bring Watchmen to the big screen. The project has changed hands and is yet to be produced.
