As an avid vacationer, I'm appalled at the recent price increases of plane tickets... and am curious to see how others are dealing with the current bad world economy when it comes to planning their vacation. Is it affecting your vacation?

I want a vacation!

When you think about vacation, you want to think about fun stuff such as getting tan, relaxing, doing things you want to do and leaving the stressful stuff behind.

You don't want to have to think (too much) about the vacation planning beyond picking a fabulous destination and dreaming of going there!

However, given the world economy's current status, one might just have to think about planning a bit more.

With gas prices sky high, plane tickets, train tickets and car trips have all become more expensive.

What is one to do in such a situation?

Unless you're a fan of bicycling (or walking!) to your destination, there's not much you can do about it. You can go less far. You can choose to go on a staycation...(for those unfamiliar with the term, it means going on vacation close to your home! see link at the bottom of the lens)

Going on vacation in the current economy

Make up for the money you spent on travel elsewhere

For those that find it too depressing to have to limit the places we travel to because of unfairly high gas prices (many I suspect), and that are not made of money, we have to find other ways to save money...while still be able to go on vacation.

For students, the hostels are always a good solution. But for the others who don't favor grubby places and bunk beds, vacation rentals seem to me to be the best deals.

Why are vacation rentals better than other types of rental in this current economical context do you ask? Check out my list to see what I think.... and let me know if you disagree!

I think vacation rentals are a good idea because....

  • I like the idea of having plenty of space... and not having to pay a lot more for that space (think prices of suites compared to standard rooms)
  • I know I'll save money by having access to a kitchen and not having to go out to a restaurant twice a day (and may not put on as much weight that way!). I also get to cook with foreign ingredients (if I'm going abroad). This might sound weird but visiting a supermarket in a foreign country is always in my must-do list!">
  • No standard, bland hotel room without having to pay extra to stay in a boutique hotel... True, the place's decoration might not be what I'd choose but at least it's personalized!
  • more reasons to come

Article on Renting a Home Abroad
Excerpt from the article : "As someone who travelled the world and spent most of his adult years living outside the U.S., Hemingway knew what it was like to immerse himself in a foreign culture. Today's adventurous travellers are likewise seeking to know and experience their destinations as fully as possible, to savor a sweet taste of life abroad. Of course you don't have to write the Great American Novel, Run with the Bulls in Pamplona, game fish in the Gulf Stream or go on an African safari to have a desire to see your destination from the inside vantage point of a local - you just have to rent a home away from home."
Staycations (a Businessweek article)
Taking a vacation without going very far: Close-to-home vacations now have a nameĀ— : staycations. With gas prices soaring, many people are choosing shorter trips to local attractions rather than costly long drives or flights. Click on the link to read more...

We're going on a road trip next week. Should be fun with gas at over $5/gallon for diesel. Our parked RV is our new guest room! Welcome to All Things Travel.
