Kauai Monk Seal

Endangered Species

Kauai Monk Seal

Some where along the line on your travels down the Hawaiian beaches you may come across one of Hawaii's prized native animals the Hawaiian Monk Seal.

There are a few guidelines that you should follow when you see a monk seal. First remember that these are an endangered species. If you are found trying to move, wake up, feed, get to close to or otherwise harass a monk seal there is a possibility of a large fine. Take your pictures and otherwise enjoy these animals from a distance. Usually at least 100 feet, if there is a mother and her pup it is best to even stay a greater distance away.

Never get between a mother and her pup.
Keep dogs well away from the seals
Do Not try to feed a monk seal
Do not shout, throw sticks at or otherwise try to wake up a monk seal so you can take a picture.
Keep children well away from the seals.
Never try swimming near a monk seal
Never walk between a monk seal and the shoreline (the ocean)

Often when the a monk seal decides to sun bathe near a hotel, the hotel workers will put up barriers around the seal. Do not walk into the barrier. If you need to get to the other side, walk around the barrier.
