Why Encourage Summer Reading?

Students need to keep their skills alive and growing during the summer months. Reading books that stretch the mind will help with vocabulary and comprehension. Reading books that are easy and fun will build motivation for more reading.

Parents everywhere want to give their children the best possible chance to succeed and in today's competitive educational environment, the successful students read, read, read. The standardized tests and college board tests assume a vast working knowledge of many kinds of literature. Your student will not get everything needed from the books read in high school English.

Encourage (or even demand!) that your student read this summer. Here are some tidbits to get things started.

Should Everyone Read the 'Classics'?

Should all students be required to read the 'classics' of literature?

The Common Sense of It

Summer reading will help your student succeed in fall. There are absolutely no two ways about it. Just like any machine, the brain can become rusty with disuse. If you don't use the reading and comprehension skills that are developed, you will slide backwards. Teachers know this-they plan weeks of review each fall.

Help your student make more efficient use of his or her educational hours. Don't allow the brain to get rusty this summer! Require your student (no matter how old or young) to read, read, read!

Some educators believe that students need to read and study even over summer vacation to prepare for the coming year. Others believe that kids need a break for their brains and that the long summer months are better spent in free play or pursuing interests outside of school. What do you think?

Should summer work be required of students?

Yes! Kids' minds need to stay active and focused, or they'll lose academic ground.

No! Kids need time to be kids and to relax in the summer.
