Research presented at the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) shows that by starting flu vaccinations in August -- ahead of the start of the typical flu vaccination season -- healthcare providers could reach an additional 10.7 million children when these children are already in the doctor's office.

The potential impact of early vaccination was underscored by another study that found that less than 20 percent of school-aged children between five and 18 years of age were vaccinated in their pediatricians' offices during the past influenza season. This study also showed that, on average, only about 40 percent of those children recommended to receive two doses of influenza vaccine actually received the second dose.

In February, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted to expand flu vaccination recommendations to include all children six months through 18 years of age. Previously, the recommendations were for vaccination of children from six months to 59 months of age. The new guidelines add approximately 30 million children to the recommended pediatric population to be vaccinated annually against influenza.

Earlier Influenza Vaccination Could Reach Nearly 11 Million More Children in Provider Offices to examine the potential impact of early influenza vaccination, MedImmune researchers analyzed the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), a federally funded survey of families, individuals, and medical providers that collects data on health services utilized by Americans. They compared the number of children who had at least one healthcare provider visit between October 1 and December 31 (the traditional influenza vaccination period) to the number of children who had at least one visit between August 1 and December 31. The analysis found that by extending the flu vaccination season into August, an additional 6.6 million children would have vaccination opportunity during a well visit and 10.7 million children would have an opportunity to get a flu vaccine during an already-existing provider visit (well or sick).

Flu Vaccination Rates in Pediatrician Offices Remain Low
Another study, presented by Praful U. Bhatt, M.D. of Lock Haven, PA, assessed influenza vaccination use in pediatricians' offices. Researchers selected a nationally representative sample of 44 pediatric practices in advance of the 2007-2008 influenza season. In these offices, the mean influenza vaccination rates were 37 percent in six to 23 month olds (1), 24 percent in 24 to 59 month olds, 19 percent in five to eight year olds, and 12 percent in nine to 17 year olds through February 29, 2008.

Additionally, the study looked at compliance with the recommendation that children younger than nine years of age who have not been previously vaccinated receive two doses of influenza vaccine at least four weeks apart. Compliance rates for receiving the second dose were 55 percent (six to 23 months) (1), 43 percent (24 to 59 months) and 25 percent (five to eight years of age).

The study also found that vaccination and compliance rates were higher in practices that administered influenza vaccine for more months during the vaccination season (starting earlier and ending later).

WASHINGTON - The Institute of Medicine said in 2004 there was no credible evidence to show that vaccines containing the preservative Thimerosal led to autism in children. But thousands of families have a different take based on personal experience.

Some of them are going to court Monday as attorneys will attempt to show that the mercury-based preservative triggers symptoms of autism.

Two 10-year-old boys from Portland, Ore., will serve as test cases to determine whether many of the children and their families should be compensated. Attorneys for the boys will attempt to show the boys were happy, healthy and developing normally - but, after being exposed to vaccines
with Thimerosal, they began to regress.

Thimerosal has been removed in recent years from standard childhood vaccines, except flu vaccines that are not packaged in single-doses. The CDC says single-dose flu shots currently are available only in limited quantities. In 2004, a committee with the Institute of Medicine concluded there was no credible evidence that vaccines containing Thimerosal caused autism.

Overall, nearly 4,900 families have filed claims with the U.S. Court of Claims alleging that vaccines caused autism and other neurological problems in their children. Lawyers for the families are presenting three different theories of how vaccines caused autism.

The Office of Special Masters of the claims court has instructed the plaintiffs to designate three test cases for each of the three theories - nine cases in all - and has assigned three special masters to handle the cases. Three cases in the first category were heard last year, but no decisions have been reached.

The two cases beginning Monday are among the three that focus on the second theory of causation: that Thimerosal-containing vaccines alone cause autism. The plaintiff in the third case originally scheduled for hearing this month has withdrawn and lawyers and court officials are working to agree on substitute case.

Hearings in the test cases for the third theory of causation are scheduled in mid-September.
Lawyers for the petitioning families in the cases being heard this month say they will present evidence that injections with Thimerosal deposit a form of mercury in the brain. That mercury excites certain brain cells that stay chronically activated trying to get rid of the intrusion.
"In some kids, there's enough of it that it sets off this chronic neuroinflammatory pattern that can lead to regressive autism," said attorney Mike Williams.

In the end, the families' attorneys hope to convince the special master hearing their case that Thimerosal belongs on the list of causes for the inflammation that leads to regressive autism.
To win, the attorneys for the two boys, William Mead and Jordan King, will have to show that it's more likely than not that the vaccine actually caused the injury.

Many members of the medical community are skeptical of the families' claims. They worry that the claims about the dangers of vaccines could cause some people to forgo vaccines that prevent illness.

"I think that what's so endearing to me about the anti-vaccine people, is they're perfectly willing to go from one hypothesis to the next without a backward glance," said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Autism is a developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person's ability to communicate and interact with others. Dr. Andrew Gerber, a psychiatrist, said that medical experts don't have a comprehensive understanding of what causes autism, but they do know there is a strong hereditary component.

Toxins from the environment could play a role, but currently, data does not support that they do, Gerber said.

Arguments are scheduled to go on throughout the month. A final decision could take several more months. Claims that are successful would result in compensation taking into account lost earnings after age 18 and up to $250,000 for pain and suffering.

The families or the federal government can also appeal the decision of the special master to the Court of Federal Claims or to a federal appeals court.

The court Web site says more than 12,500 claims have been filed since creation of the program in 1987, including more than 5,300 autism cases, and more than $1.7 billion has been paid in claims. It says there is now more than $2.7 billion in a trust fund supported by an excise tax on each dose of vaccine covered by the program. END

On Wednesday morning, village health nurse Jayalalitha of Katchur Primary Health Centre in Poondi Panchayat Union began administering measles vaccine to children less than 13 months old. She took a vial from the ice-box and administered the prescribed quantity to the waiting children. Soon after, five children - Puja, daughter of Angamuthu, and Nandhini, daughter of Ezhumalai from Pennalurpet, both 10 months old; Rakshitha of Plazpalayam, Mohanapriya, daughter of Mohan, Plazpalayam and Vignesh of Gudiyum, all aged around 12 months - developed complications and were rushed to the Government Hospital here around noon.

While, Puja, Nandhini and Mohanapriya died in the hospital, the others were saved. Later in the evening, two other children, both from the Pennalurpet area, were admitted to hospital. A 10-month-old boy, Lokesh, son of Kuppaiah of Venkatapuram, collapsed after he was given the measles shot by the Koonimangadu PHC nurse, Parvathy. He died on the way to the Institute of Child Health, Egmore.
Tension prevailed at the Tiruvallur Government Hospital after relatives refused to accept the bodies and demanded immediate action against those responsible for the deaths.

Minister's assurance
Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam who came to the hospital in the evening enquired after the health of the ailing children and consoled the parents of the deceased.
He assured them that action would be taken against those found responsible for the incident. The nurses - Jayalalitha and Parvathy - have been placed under suspension, he said.

Talking to reporters, Mr.Panneerselvam said the vaccines were earlier procured from Pune, but only six months ago, the State had begun buying vaccines from the public sector establishment, Human Biological Institute, Hyderabad. About 20,000 children had received vaccines from the same batch (before they were withdrawn) in the State, but there were no reports of any complications.

Reports of adverse reactions to the new HPV vaccine are escalating. One particularly heart-wrenching example is the story of an active 12-year-old little girl named Brittany who recently lost all feeling in her leg and collapsed two weeks after receiving the Gardasil vaccine. Although she once had dreams of earning an athletic scholarship, she now struggles to hobble around each day with the aid of braces and a walker, First Coast News reports. Like many other parents, this girl's mother had no idea that this kind of reaction to the vaccine was possible and never would've allowed her daughter to receive it had she been made aware of this. Gardasil vaccine, because the vaccine is part of the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund. Unfortunately, the only recourse for those injured by this vaccine is to file a claim with the government. Translation: compensation of the victims becomes the responsibility of taxpayers.

Many doctors are not recommending this vaccine, because in addition to the serious adverse reactions and deaths that have been reported, they have concerns about the vaccine's long-term safety and efficacy. In her well-written book called The Parents' Concise Guide to Childhood Vaccinations, Dr. Lauren Feder notes that the pain that many girls experience after the shot is probably due to the aluminum adjuvants in the vaccine. She also cautions that the vaccine contains polysorbate 80, a substance linked to infertility in mice. After some deliberation, it was her opinion that the vaccine had more risks than benefits.

One vaccine researcher, Diane M. Harper, a physician and someone who has spent twenty years on the development of the HPV vaccine, has publicly stated through a KPC News report that giving this vaccine to young girls is a "great big public health experiment," as this vaccine's safety and efficacy for young girls is unknown

Of course, testing tiny girls with a vaginal swab to see if they've already been exposed would be wholly inappropriate. Harper has many other concerns, as outlined in the news report, but she is having trouble getting her views heard through mainstream media. Another concern voiced by Harper and many other doctors is that even if someone gets the HPV vaccine, regular pap smears are still needed, as the vaccine doesn't protect against all strains of HPV.

The reason many doctors like this vaccine is because HPV can cause cervical cancer. According to the CDC, certain types of HPV can cause genital warts, and certain types of HPV can cause cervical and other cancers (http://www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm) . The types of HPV that can cause genital warts are considered low-risk and are not the same as the types that cause cancer. Again, genital warts will not turn into cancer. However, the CDC reports that in 90% of all cases of HPV, including both the wart-causing and the cancer-causing varieties, the body's immune system will clear the infection naturally within two years. In fact, the CDC maintains that most people who contract HPV will not have any symptoms at all.

But just how common is cervical cancer in the United States? To answer this question, it is useful to look at some statistics that Kaiser has posted on its website concerning the incidence of cervical cancer in the United States ((http://www.statehealthfacts.org/compare...) . The statistics are available by state and by ethnicity. For example, in the state of Maryland, 9.3 out of every 100,000 women contracted cervical cancer in 2003. Without considering any of the personal risk factors (like cervical cancer in the family), the general risk for someone living in Maryland would be 9.3/100000 or .0093% chance of contracting this disease. It is important to note that many people have pre-cancerous lesions that are treated by their doctors and that data is not reflected here. However, generally speaking, assuming that a woman gets regular pap smears, the risk for developing cervical cancer seems relatively small. Using the state of Maryland as an example again, according to the statistics provided by Kaiser, only 2.5 out of every 100,000 women or .0025% actually died from cervical cancer in the state of Maryland in 2004.

Yet, that very situation is what this piece of
legislation is supposed to address.
I have been in public life and have served this country for many years. Frankly, I do not think too many things that I see surprise me anymore about our laws and about Government. Three years ago, though, I began to learn about a gap in our legal system that does truly concern me. In 1993 the Governmental Affairs Committee began to investigate the cold war radiation experiments. These
experiments are one of the unfortunate legacies

The number of British children being given controversial anti-psychotic drugs has increased sharply, according to research.

As many as 3,000 children were administered the unlicensed drugs between 1996 and 2005, despite concerns from experts that they could cause long-term harm and even death.

Doctors gave out twice as many prescriptions for the medication in 2005 as in 1992, even though they are not licensed to be given to children. The number of prescriptions for children in the 7 to 12 age group trebled, the largest area of expansion, according to findings by Ian Wong, a Professor of Paediatric Medicines Research at the London School of Pharmacy.

In most cases, the drugs have been given to children with behavioural and personality disorders, autism and hyperactivity.

The research is to be published in the US journal Pediatrics next month. David Healy, Professor of Psychological Medicine at Cardiff University gave warning that the drugs could cause heart, circulatory and breathing problems.

"There is a real question over whether the drugs can kill, for a number of reasons," he told The Guardian. "One is that all anti-psychotics act on the \ dopamine." Professor Healy said that dopamine was known to have a role in cardiovascular regulation.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority is concerned about the use of the drugs in the absence of evidence to prove that they are safe to be given to children. However, it cannot act unless trials are conducted by manufacturers.
The increased use of the drugs in this country follows a huge rise in their use in the United States.

Professor Wong contends that children on anti-psychotic medication are more likely to die prematurely, something which may not be caused by the drug itself. "The mortality rate is much higher," he said "It could be some underlying problems of the brain. It doesn't show the drug is causing any deaths but there is this inequality."
Professor Wong said that he was aware of a number of deaths of children with underlying incurable conditions such as Aids, so it was hard to establish whether the drugs played a part.

The increase in the use of the drugs has come at a time when Prozac and other similar drugs used to treat depression have gone out of patent.
In the US, the prescription for children of anti-psychotic drugs has increased along with the trend for behavioural problems to be diagnosed as manic depression.

A DECISION by the US government to award compensation under its vaccine damage programmed to a child diagnosed with symptoms of autism has been hailed as "unprecedented" by campaigners.
The claim is one of nearly 5000 cases currently pending in the American vaccine "court", which allege that mercury-containing vaccines resulted in autism.

Washington-based attorney Jim Moody, one of the lawyers involved in the cases, told the Sunday Herald the case was scheduled to go to trial in May, but "to everyone's surprise" the government conceded liability.

"It is also significant they conceded it was causing autism, they could have just said vaccines caused injury or been vague," he said. "Never before has our government linked vaccines to autism."

According to court papers, the girl was developing normally during the first 18 months of her life. But the officials agreed to pay compensation after it was demonstrated that five vaccinations she received on one day significantly aggravated an underlying type of genetic disorder, leading to a condition which had "features" of autism.
A press conference is planned for Atlanta tomorrow, where the girl's parents are expected to talk about the case.

While the US health department continues to insist there is no evidence that vaccines cause autism, it has been seized upon as a major concession by campaigners on both sides of the Atlantic who believe there is a link.

Wendy Fournier, of the National Autism Association in America, claimed it echoed the stories of thousands of children across the country.
"With almost 5000 similar cases pending in vaccine court, we are confident that this is just the first of many that will confirm what we have believed for so long - vaccines can and do cause children to regress into autism," she said.

Bill Welsh, president of the Edinburgh-based Autism Treatment Trust, said: "Over many years the compelling evidence of parents in this regard has been ignored by a medical hierarchy who appear more concerned with vested interests than the health of children."

The girl received five vaccinations for nine diseases on one day in July 2000 - including for chickenpox, polio, diphtheria, tetanus and the MMR jab for mumps, measles and rubella. The decision by the Division of Vaccine Injury Compensation did not pinpoint specific issues with the vaccinations but concluded they "significantly aggravated an underlying mitochondrial disorder, which predisposed her to deficits in cellular energy metabolism, and manifested as a regressive encephalopathy with features of autism disorder."

In the UK, much of the concern around vaccines and autism has focused on the MMR triple jab for mumps, measles and rubella. However, numerous studies have failed to find any link, including the largest ever study, which was published earlier this month.
Thimerosal, which contains mercury, began to be phased out as a preservative in childhood jabs from 1999 in the US and in the UK in 2004. It has never been used in MMR.

Tina Cheatham of the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) said: "HRSA has reviewed the scientific information concerning the allegation that vaccines cause autism and has found no credible evidence to support the claim.
"Accordingly, in every claim submitted under the Act, HRSA has maintained and continues to maintain the position that vaccines do not cause autism."
A spokesman for the Vaccine Damage Payments Unit in the UK, which is run by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), said details of the disabilities involved in payouts made under the scheme were not recorded.

"DWP keeps the vaccine damage scheme under regular review to ensure that it continues to meet policy intentions," he said. END

PARIS, Jan 31 (Reuters) - French authorities have opened a formal investigation into two managers from drugs groups GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L: Quote, Profile, Research) and Sanofi Pasteur over a vaccination campaign in the 1990s, a judicial source said late on Thursday.

Judge Marie-Odile Bertella-Geffroy also opened an investigation for manslaughter against Sanofi Pasteur MSD, a joint venture between Sanofi Aventis (SASY.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) and Merck (MRK.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the same source said.

The investigations follow allegations that the companies failed to fully disclose side effects from an anti-hepatitis B drug used in a vaccination campaign between 1994 and 1998.

There was no immediate comment from the companies or the two managers involved.
From 1994 to 1998, almost two thirds of the French population and almost all newborn babies were vaccinated against hepatitis B, but the campaign was suspended after concerns arose about possible secondary effects from the treatments.

"Toxic Children, Toxic Lies" Rally Expresses Outrage Over AAP's Refusal to Demand Safer Vaccines, Highlights Dramatic Recovery Stories
Elk Grove, IL (February 18, 2008)- Dozens of parents of vaccine-injured children from all over America will join a cadre of researchers and physicians Wednesday morning for "Toxic Children, Toxic Lies," a protest at the American Academy of Pediatrics Headquarters in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. The rally will express the outrage of thousands of parents of autistic children over the American Academy of Pediatrics' unethical maneuvers to protect the National Immunization Program, even if it means lying to the public about the safety of children's vaccines. Parents will also share dramatic recovery stories of vaccine-injured children who have undergone biomedical intervention therapies to reverse the damage caused by toxic metals and viral overload in vaccines.
Parents of vaccine-injured children were shocked at the recent censorship attempt of the AAP, which recently demanded that ABC cancel the series premiere of the new drama "Eli Stone." The episode portrayed an attorney who successfully sued a pharmaceutical giant after his client's child became autistic after receiving a mercury-containing vaccine.

On Wednesday, February 20th, 2008, parents of vaccine-injured children will gather at the American Academy of Pediatrics Headquarters at 141 NW Point Boulevard, Elk Grove Village, IL, beginning at 7:30 a.m., to confront AAP leadership as they arrive for work. A news conference will be held for the media at 9:30 a.m. featuring parents and physicians.

In 1999, the AAP recommended the removal of thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, from all childhood vaccines. However, the AAP has recently reversed its position on thimerosal, and now inexplicably states that there is no health concern with injecting mercury, a known neurotoxin, into infants and children. Dozens of advocacy groups representing parents of autistic children believe the AAP leadership have become apologists for unsafe vaccines, and dangerous one-size-fits-all vaccination policies which have harmed a subset of genetically vulnerable children. Furthermore, autism advocacy groups are dismayed that the AAP continues to refuse to recognize the efficacy and growing popularity of biomedical intervention therapies for vaccine-injured children.

Parental concern over the safety of the vaccination schedule has risen as the number of recommended vaccines has risen. In 1983, when autism affected just 1 in 10,000 children, the Centers for Disease Control's mandatory vaccination schedule consisted of 10 shots. Today, when 1 in 150 children is affected with an autism spectrum disorder, the CDC now recommends 36 separate shots from birth to age six, a whopping increase of 260%. With that increase, the prevalence of neurological disorders like autism and ADHD has grown exponentially.
Thousands of parents believe their child's regression into autism was triggered, if not caused, by over-vaccination with toxic ingredients and live viruses found in vaccines, such as mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde, ether and antifreeze. The Centers for Disease Control and the AAP dispute this, but independent research and the first-hand accounts of parents tell a different story. Additionally, autistic children around the country have seen dramatic recoveries from vaccine injury when they begin to undergo biomedical intervention therapies to reverse the damage caused by toxic metals and viral overload.

"A growing number of experimental, epidemiological and biochemical research has unequivocally shown that mercury is directly linked to the development of autism spectrum disorders and is significantly toxic to the gastrointestinal, immunological, metabolic and neurobiological systems in children," said Ayoub. "The nation's one-size-fits-all vaccination policy has indisputably harmed some of our kids. It is time for the AAP and the CDC to stop the denial. We must demand answers and learn why the increase in the number and composition of so many vaccinations has led to an epidemic in neurological disorders in our nation's children."

WASHINGTON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - U.S. policy in preparing for a potential bird flu pandemic is veering dangerously toward a heavy-handed law-enforcement approach, the American Civil Liberties Union said on Monday.

The group, which advocates for individuals' legal rights based on the U.S. Constitution, said federal government pandemic plans were confusing and could emphasize a police and military approach to outbreaks of disease, instead of a more sensible public health approach.

"Rather than focusing on well-established measures for protecting the lives and health of Americans, policymakers have recently embraced an approach that views public health policy through the prism of national security and law enforcement," the ACLU report reads.

But the U.S. Health and Human Services Department (HHS) said the group had misunderstood the government's approach and said current plans already incorporate many of the ACLU's recommendations.

Infectious disease experts agree that a pandemic of some sort of influenza is inevitable, and most worries focus on H5N1 avian influenza. Although it mainly attacks birds, the virus has infected 349 people since 2003 and killed 216 of them.

A few mutations could turn it into a highly infectious disease for people and could kill millions globally.

Most countries are working to develop plans to deal with the potential consequences. The U.S. plans are available on Web sites such as pandemicflu.gov.

The ACLU said it was worried that the plan called for military and police involvement in enforcing a quarantine.

The ACLU experts said they were especially disturbed by an October executive order from President George W. Bush that directed HHS to establish a task force to plan for potential catastrophes like a terrorist attack, pandemic influenza or a natural disaster that would ensure full use of Department of Defense resources.

The Bush order does not specify what the Department of Defense role would be, but also mentions military medical research facilities that have played a role in health for decades.

"Pandemic planning today tends to emphasize mandatory vaccination and forced treatment," the ACLU's Tania Simoncelli told a news conference.

"It also means that sick people are being treated as criminals and enemies of the state rather than individuals in need of care."

The ACLU said plans should focus on how to help people stay home without losing pay, and instead of merely advising citizens to stockpile food, should provide for ways to help them do so.

HHS spokesman Bill Hall said the government plan stressed community and individual involvement.

"They have mischaracterized our planning efforts. They are confusing a containment attempt as our overall pandemic response once the virus has spread beyond our ability to stop it," Hall said in a telephone interview.

"Respecting civil liberties has been an important component of our pandemic planning."

Federal health officials are reviewing whether routine immunizations contributed to the deaths of as many as three North Idaho babies this fall, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week.

The agency has requested autopsy reports and medical records for at least two children and could seek them for a third Kootenai County infant, all of whom died in September and October, apparently within days of receiving recommended vaccines.

There's no clear link between the vaccines and the deaths, which were classified as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, said Curtis Allen, a spokesman for the CDC. "There is nothing so far to indicate that there is a particular problem other than these children died in the same city," Allen said.

But the mother of one of the children said it's no coincidence that her 4-month-old son died within days of receiving injections to prevent serious childhood illnesses, including diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, polio, rotavirus and invasive pneumococcal disease.

"My baby was so healthy," said Shelly Walker, 39, of Hayden. "He was extremely full of life, energy and vitality."

Nevertheless, early on the morning of Sept. 15, less than three days after Vance Vernon Walker received a round of vaccines at Lakeside Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine in Coeur d'Alene, his mother awoke to a nightmare.

"It was about 5:15 a.m. I woke up and thought, 'He's not making any noise!' " Walker recalled. "I went to pick him up and then I screamed."

Her 16 1/2-pound boy was warm and his lips were still pink, but he wasn't moving. Blood was crusted beneath his eyes, and his clothes and toys were covered with a bloody froth.

As her husband, Brian, 46, called 911, Walker worked frantically to resuscitate their child. But in the emergency room at Kootenai Medical Center, doctors said Vance had been dead for several hours.

"I grabbed my baby in my arms and held him up and I screamed, 'How in the hell did this happen?' " Walker said. "Was it the vaccines?"

Medical officials from the CDC and the federal Food and Drug Administration are working to answer that question for the Walkers and for families of two other babies who died within six weeks of each other.

Two of the deaths have been logged in the voluntary Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System -VAERS - jointly operated by the CDC and FDA, agency officials said. But Dr. Robert West, the Kootenai County coroner, confirmed that three infants died this fall within days of immunization.

Parents of the other babies could not be reached for comment.

Autopsies failed to detect any specific vaccine reactions, West said, forcing a determination of SIDS - a "diagnosis of exclusion," he noted.

He said he welcomes the federal review. "It is a little bit unusual but not totally unheard of," West said. "It deserves the investigative clout of the CDC."

Walker confirmed that her son's death was one of the Idaho cases reported to VAERS. The other reported child likely was also under the care of the Coeur d'Alene pediatric group, Allen said. That raises the possibility the children received vaccines from the same batch.

If the CDC receives three reports of deaths or 10 reports of serious non-fatal injuries related to the same lot of a vaccine, it launches a review, Allen said.

In Vance Walker's case, the immunizations included a dose of Pediarix, a combined vaccine that contains DTaP, hepatitis B and inactivated polio vaccines. His mother's records indicate the lot number of the vaccine manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline was AC21B124B.

He also received a dose of Prevnar, lot number B54007C, a vaccine manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

Allen, of the CDC, said it would be up to the medical practice to decide whether to suspend use of the vaccine. Dr. Brian Hickok, the pediatrician for Walker's son, did not return calls about the issue. A representative for the medical practice declined to comment.

Those two vaccines are the most likely to be implicated in any adverse events, said David Terzian, a Virginia lawyer who specializes in vaccine injury cases. Terzian said the Walkers have a good chance of receiving compensation for their son's death through a federal program because it occurred so soon after immunization, well within the 72 hours required by federal rules.

Information provided by drug manufacturers and attached to the vaccines reports low numbers of associated deaths. In 14 clinical trials of Pediarix, five deaths were reported among 8,088 recipients of the vaccine, including two cases of SIDS.

In a study of more than 34,000 children in which about half received Prevnar and half received a control vaccine, a dozen deaths, including five SIDS deaths, occurred in the Prevnar group. By contrast, 21 deaths occurred in the control group, including four SIDS deaths, according to manufacturer data.

Immunization specialists acknowledge that any death following vaccination is a tragedy. But they emphasize that far more children died or fell ill in the era before vaccinations.

"For the most part, disease is always going to be more risky than getting a vaccine," said Nicole Pender, health educator for the immunization program at the Washington state Department of Health.

That is no comfort to Shelly Walker. She hopes her experience inspires parents to educate themselves about the risks of vaccines and prompts them to monitor any reaction, however slight. She plans to file a claim through the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, which provides a maximum of $250,000 after a vaccine-related death.

In return, all records related to her son's injury and death will be sealed by the drug manufacturers. Walker is optimistic that they'll use the data to improve product safety so other families won't experience her tragedy.

"My hope is they're compiling data and statistics to make things better," she said. "I'm trying to believe in the inherent goodness of something here."
