Knit with Love: Free Patterns for Valentine's Day

Ranked #316 in Holidays & Celebrations, #4,195 overall | Donates to KIVA

For You With Love

Valentine's Day is the perfect time to show your loved ones just how much they mean to you. Nearly everyone loves a big box of chocolates. But, if your loved ones are like me, by mid-February they're holding onto their New Year's resolution to eat more healthily by the skin of thier teeth. Instead of a sweet treat, try showing your love with a little fiber. You know, like cashmere.

Below, you'll find totally free patterns featuring the big three of Valentine's Day: hearts, flowers and candy. Knit them and give them to your heart's content, then watch the faces of your friends and family light up with surprise at the unique expression of your love.

I Heart Knitting

Give someone your (knitted) heart.

Mini Felted Hearts
Tiny little hearts make a quick and fun gift topper, or gift themselves. Pile a bunch in a bowl, or string a bunch together, et voila, you've got hand made Valentine's Day decorations!
"Mom" Heart Tattoo
A heart pillow in the shape of a "Mom" tattoo? What more could a mother want?
Heart Hats for a Girl and Her Monkey
Know someone 3 years old and who carries around a monkey (or dolly) everywhere she goes? Then check out this pair of patterns for coordinating hats ringed with hearts.
Knitted Heart Ring
Ready for a little challenge? These reversible rings are double knit with crochet cotton on tiny needles. It may seem a bit confusing if you've never double knitted before, but fear not! The author has included a link to an explination in the pattern and you'll find a video on it below.
Heart Lace Socks
These adorable socks have little lace hearts sprinkled around the leg and down the top of the foot. Adorable!
La-La-Love You Cowl
More lace hearts adorn this elegant cowl. This time large columns of hearts keep your neck warm and toasty. Even if you're not going to knit it, the pattern is worth a look-see. The author has done her research and shares a brief history of the cowl. Very interesting.

Double Knitting

Double your pleasure, double your fun with double knitting. (Whoo, that was cheesy. Sorry, but I couldn't resist.) This technique creates two parallel panels of fabric at the same time. Usually, it's used to make reversible items, with each side being a negative image of the other. (Like in the Knitted Heart Ring above.) Here's a video tutorial on how it works.

To make the little hearts on the ring, you'll need to combine double knitting with intarsia. You can check out explinations for colorwork on the lens Intarsia and Stranded Knitting: Two Ways to Add Color to Your Knitting.

Flowers in Her Hair...Flowers Everywhere...

Give a token of your love that will last a long time.

Easy Felted Flower
Written to be a decoration for a hair elastic, this simple (yet pretty) flower is a great starting point for all sorts of gifts. Need a broach? A decoration for a purse or hat? You got it. Want something flashy? Knit it out of novelty yarn instead of feltable wool. Et, voila! You've got something for everyone!
Flower Scarf (pdf)
This cute little scarf is a fun take on the "knit a short scarf and button it around the neck" theme. Instead of a button, there's a bobble that fits into the center of a big, beautiful flower on the other end of the scarf. Functional and fashionable, it's sure to warm someone's neck...and thier heart.
Single Rose Dishcloth
This beautiful washcloth features a very nicely done single rose. Created by knits and purls, it's a good project when you're just not in the mood for lace. No need to tell people it's a dishcloth, either. Knit with a good quality cotton and given with a bar of rose soap, it would make a great gift!
Rose Vine Necklace (pdf)
Named "How Does Your Garden Grow?" this clever felted scarf looks like a trailing rose vine. Very necklace-like, it would be a fantastic gift for the hopeless romantic on your list.
Chevette (flower chocker necklace)
I love knitty.com. I just do. They publish the most fantastic patterns. Always fresh, always very "now", and always free! This beautiful necklace is a perfect example. The lace and flowers look edgy yet vulnerable, not outdated at all. Anyway, enough of me rambling. Click the link to see for yourself. Go ahead, I dare ya. And if you don't agree, don't tell me. I may cry. (See? I can do edgy yet vulnerable, too.)
Deep Sea Flower Dice Bag
This surprisingly elegant dice bag is knit with Noro Kureon, a varigated yarn that gives it a soft, other-worldly color change. Because gamer girls need love, too.

Mmmmm, Chocolate

Whew, it was hard to find knitted chocolate. You'd think there would be more yarn-y homages to that wonderful stuff. Oh, well, here is what I found. Any one of them would make fantastic gifts for the chocolate lover(s) in your life.

P.S. If you know of any more free chocolate knitting patterns out there, please let me know and I'll add them here tout de suite.
Spaced Chocolate Beanie
Know someone with chocolate on the brain? How about giving them a hat to match? This beanie has the word "CHOCOLATE" across it in bold, easy to read letters. Just so that there's no need to ever ask, "Whatcha thinkin' about?"
Chocolate Bar and Wrapper
This realistic looking bar of partially unwrapped chocolate is a clever pattern that is easily customizable to suite the needs of any chocolate lover. The chocolate (which looks like it has break-off-able pieces) can be knitted out of light or dark brown yarn, or even white to mimick any flavor of that creamy goodness. Knit the wrapper out of whatever color you've got hanging around, and even choose between silver or gold for the bit of torn-back foil. Now if it would only smell like chocolate, it would be perfect. Sigh.
Iced Chocolate Cupcake
Another easily adaptable pattern. It's even got a cherry on top!
M&M Cloth
It's an M&M! On a washcloth! Made from knits and purls! Makes a great gift when paired with chocolate scented soap!

Knitting Worth Lingering Over

Knitted nighties your special sweetie will love

Hush-Hush
This lovely little slip has just enough lace at the bust and hemline. A ribbon accent at the bottom adds to the simple sweetness.
Allusion
Inspired by lace-up corsets, this short top is knit side-to-side to take advantage of the form fitting stretch of garter stitch. Embroidered X's down the stockinette stitch front gives the piece that much more oomph.
Lace Nightie (pdf)
Featuring a feather chevron-ish all over lace pattern, this nightie is elegant from its icord spaghetti straps, down to its barely rippled hemline.
Iris
Combining both knitting and sheer fabric, this feminine little number is just the thing for a hot night (wink, wink.)
Vintage Vest and Panties
Into the glamor of the 1940's? This vintage pattern for a lacy tie-in-the-back top and mid thigh boy-shorts would make a set of garments Ginger Rogers would be proud to wear.
Mon Petite Chou
A modern update on the top and undies, this adorable lace bra and panties are held together with some strategically placed ribbon.

Lovely Lace

Nothing says romance like a little lace
