Valentine's Day

A few fun facts about Valentine's Day:

According to the U.S. Greeting Card Association, Valentine's Day is the second-largest greeting card day behind Christmas, with approximately one billion cards being sent on this day every year.

The Greeting Card Association also estimates that men spend twice as much as women on Valentine's Day cards and gifts.

Have you ever wondered why February 14th is considered the biggest romantic day of the year? Well, here's a little history:

Saint Valentine of Rome

One of three known saints named Valentine, he lived around 270 A.D. and was certainly associated with love and marriage. According to tradition, Valentine was a cleric who came into conflict with the Roman Emperor Claudius II. At the time, Rome was in its decline and facing pressure from the Gauls, Slavs, Huns, Turks and Mongolians. Claudius reportedly theorized that having a family would distract young able-bodied men from becoming good soldiers, so he forbade marriage among young men.

This caused a major shock to the populace, but they dared not rebel. Valentine felt this was a sore injustice and began secretly conducting marriage ceremonies for young lovers. Inevitably, though, he was discovered and arrested.

While in prison, Valentine was approached by a jailer named Asterius, who had heard that he could perform miracles and wished him to heal his blind daughter. Catholic legend has it that Valentine performed the miracle through his strong faith; the Protestant version refutes this. In any case, Valentine and Asterius' daughter met and became friends.

Claudius II is said to have been impressed with Valentine's dignity and conviction, although they did not agree on the issue of marriage. Claudius unsuccessfully attempted to convert Valentine to the Roman gods, while Valentine tried to convert Claudius to Christianity. It ended with Claudius ordering Valentine's execution.

It grieved Asterius's daughter to learn of Valentine's imminent death. Valentine requested a pen and paper from his jailer and wrote a letter to her, ending with, "From Your Valentine." According to legend, Valentine was executed on February 14, 270 A.D.

There are records of other St. Valentines, including:
* A bishop of Interamna (modern Terni)
* A martyr in the Roman province of Africa.

A Roman Beginning

After Valentine's death, February 14th became a day of romance with Valentine as its patron saint. On this day, young lovers would exchange handwritten notes of affection and, with the rise of Christianity, it came to be known as St. Valentine's Day.

During the 14th century, Valentine's Day became more widely associated with love. Medieval scholar Henry Ansgar Kelly credits Chaucer as the first to document a relationship between this day and romance in "The Parliament of Fowls," in which birds mated on February 14th:

"For this was on St. Valentine's Day, When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate."

By the Middle Ages, Saint Valentine was one of the most popular saints in France and England. The association between St. Valentine's Day and courtship was so prevalent by this time that it survived the Church's attempts to sanctify the day. In England, exchanging handmade gifts and cards were quite common by the 18th century and it spread from there to the American colonies. During the 1840s, commercially produced Valentine's day cards began to appear, the first ones being created by Esther A. Howlanda of Mount Holyoke, a college graduate and native of Worcester. Mass. Now known as the "Mother of the Valentine," she made elaborate cards out of lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap".

Valentine's Day Poem by Lamar Cole

The Night Was Made For Romance

The night was made for romance.
In the night our two hearts dance.
Under the stars our lips touch.
In the garden your embrace means so much.

The night was made for love.
Our hearts cooing like a white dove.
Your eyes sparkling like diamonds so white.
I love you darling with all my might.

The night was made for caring and trust.
And darling, God made this night for us.

Dating tips

These tips go for both men and women, so listen up!
  1. Be punctual. Sure, you can spend ten extra minutes picking out the perfect dress or slicking your hair. But being late speaks volumes about what you really think about your date. If you think so poorly about the person you're dating that you have to make him/her wait on your first date, that reduces your chances for a second date.
  2. Be occupied. If you have time to fret about making a fool out of yourself, you obviously have time to brush your hair and teeth and maybe even play a quick game of solitaire. Plus, take it from a gal: sweaty palms are unattractive. Relax and have fun.
  3. Be yourself. If you're going for a long-term relationship, this is the single smartest thing you can do. Your date will eventually see through you if you pretend to be something you're not. Besides, if he/she can't like you for who you really are, is it really worth the effort?
  4. Be busy. If you talk to your date over the phone, keep it brief. Plead errands or an appointment, or maybe some urgent homework or office work you simply have to get done. And don't constantly call him/her; that can get annoying and tells him/her that you have nothing better to do. When setting up your date, suggest a day perhaps two or three days down the road, both so your date can plan for it and so you can keep any appointments you have.
  5. Accept compliments with grace. Ladies, if a guy tells you your dress looks lovely, a simple "thank you" will suffice. Ditto for men if she tells you that suit looks good on you.
  6. Leave your ex out of it. You aren't dating your ex (unless you're both thinking about getting back together), so don't bring him/her up.
  7. Stick to positive topics. Negativity can kill your chances for a second date real fast. Your date really doesn't want to hear about your crazy uncle, so change the subject if it comes up.
  8. Be honest about your opinions. You can't agree with anybody 100% of the time. Don't be afraid to disagree politely. Don't turn it into an argument; just be honest about what you think.
  9. Never compare. Sure, Susan might be the smartest and Jeannie the cutest, but they might both be insulted if they think you're "shopping around" and dump you real fast.

Ten ways to make your Valentine's Day more romantic

  1. Create a lovespace. This is a special place where you can share your true feelings for your Valentine. This can be a whole room decorated in Valentine colors or a page on Myspace. The whole point is to create something that's just for the two of you and your romance.
  2. Send a Valentine's e-card. This is a totally romantic way to leave something sweet in your Valentine's inbox.
  3. Make a video. Just you and your webcam. If you have some musical ability, write a song for your Valentine and accompany yourself on your guitar. If not, a simple poem will do. Just express your feelings for your honey in the most genuine way you know how and send it to him/her.
  4. Buy the roses. This might seem a little cliched but it's still true. Roses express love and this isn't limited to Valentine's Day. Just buy a dozen whenever the impulse strikes and give them to your honey. You can even have a little fun with it; just give her the first rose with a note attached telling her where to find the next, the second one will tell her where to find the third, and so on.
  5. Is there anything more romantic than a candle-lit dinner? Didn't think so.
  6. Prepare a dessert. Even if it doesn't turn out perfect, your honey will love you for trying.
  7. Balloons, roses, and candies in the car. This may require you to "borrow" your honey's keys under the pretext of "errands," but imagine the look on your Valentine's face when you come back with the car filled with helium balloons, roses, and candy.
  8. Walk on the beach. If you live near a beach, you can watch the sunset together.
  9. Have dinner on the beach. With candles and music.
  10. Love letters. It doesn't get much more personal or romantic than a hand-written letter expressing your love. Leave it for your honey with a rose on top.
