And It's Taking a Bite Out of Your Budget!

It happens while you're sleeping—the lifeblood is sucked right out of your home! It's called vampire power, and it refers to the electric power that's consumed while your appliances are on standby or switched off. Though it only accounts for about 5% of U.S. household electricity use, standby power adds up. It wastes $10 billion each year!

Standby power can be a problem if your appliances and devices are old, or if you have lots of them. There are also those of us who dislike any item drawing power unless it's being used. Why give a bonus to your local utility company?

Fortunately, there is help. iGo just launched a new website, Vampire Power Sucks. The site is worth visiting just to see the blood-dripping electrical outlet graphic, but it's loaded with tips for vampire power loss prevention. I've been a long-time fan of iGo chargers, and was pleased to learn about several new items specifically developed to deal with standby power loss. Find out how you can save electricity and money with iGo's new line of chargers and surge protectors.

Standby Power

A Few Facts Courtesy of Wikipedia

Standby power, also called vampire power, vampire draw, phantom load, or leaking electricity, refers to the electric power consumed by electronic appliances while they are switched off or in a standby mode. A very common "electricity vampire" is a power adapter which has no power-off switch. Some such devices offer remote controls and digital clock features to the user, while other devices, such as power adapters for laptop computers and other electronic devices, consume power without offering any features.

The wasted standby power (vampire energy loss) of individual household electronic devices is typically very small, but the sum of all such devices within the household becomes significant. Standby power makes up a portion of homes' miscellaneous electric load, which also includes small appliances, security systems, and other small power draws.

Vampire Power Sucks

U.S. Department of Energy:

In the average home, 75% of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. This can be avoided by unplugging the appliance or using a power strip and using the switch on the power strip to cut all power to the appliance.
