Do Vampires Really Exist Today?

Do Vampires really exist in our world? Is there more to the legends and stories than we may have been led to believe? The trouble comes in separating myth from fact and "Hollywood" fiction from the real legends. What is the truth behind the mysterious legends about these blood sucking creatures?

After the recent book series and the award winning movie "Twilight" the subject of Vampires has become even more popular. Most people will agree that real Vampires, if they exist, are nothing like the characters in the movie, but what are they like?

Here we will look at Vampire legends and stories and think about the possibilities.

The Legend Of The First Vampires

This myth begins at the very creation of man and of Lilith (the first woman created for Adam).

So God created man and woman in his own image and blessed them. Many have made her a model for feminism, because when Adam would not relent in his domination of her, she grew so angry that she uttered the Holy name of God and vanished.

God then had to make Eve for Adam, making her of his rib bone, so that she would be attached to him and not leave as Lilith had done.

Here, Lilith went out to the Red Sea, where she made a bargain with the Angels and she was allowed to stay out on her own, as a witch, and MOTHER OF ALL DEMONS.

Cain was the first born son of Adam and Eve. He was banished, with a mark, from the land of his parents because he killed his brother Abel in a jealous rage. He was cursed by God and was forced to stalk the fringes of civilization, fearful of the sun and ravenous for blood, as he was refused by nature for fruits and vegetables.

According to vampire legend, Cain wandered until he found Lilith by the Red sea. She took him in and showed him the power of blood. (The Tree of life represented in blood, and thus why drinking blood / being a vampire is such a big deal in a religious context).

From Cain and Lilith came a host of demons and vampires in vague myths. Lilith taught Cain many things, including how to use his blood to evoke mystic powers and how to create others of his kind. At first Cain refused to beget, believing it was wrong to curse the world with others of his kind. But eventually he grew lonely and brought three others into the Vampiric fold. These three in turn begat 13 more.

Cain outraged by this behavior, forbade the creation of any more progeny. Gathering his children and grandchildren to him Cain built a great city - The first city in the world - where vampires and mortals coexisted in peace.

Finally the city was overthrown - some say a natural disaster was the cause; others that a spurned child's vengeful sorcery precipitated the cataclysm. Cain vanished into the wastes, never to be heard from again.

Three vampires of the second generation likewise disappeared into the mists of legends, and the children and grandchildren became the true vampires.

Mysterious Dark Haired Girl

I decided to go for a walk at night several years ago and I took a short cut through our local park. The park in my local town is prosperous environmentally speaking, acting as a habitat for an array of native creatures and being encompassed by a range of shrubbery and trees. There is also a small lake in the park too and a small bridge along the width of the lake the leads a person to the main streets where the shops reside.

I was about to step foot on the small path that led down to the lake when I saw this gorgeous, radiant girl. She had a pale, deathly complexion about her and lustrous, long black hair and she was dancing. She had pointed ears and slant, red eyes that were mesmerizing and beside her stood the corpses of several ducks. Blood was dribbling down her mouth and she was dancing and humming an alluring tune. I must have stared at her for several minutes before I just ran home. I felt this surge of anger and hatred and I bolted.

Later on, I went to the local archives in our library and came across in an excerpt in a book covering the history of our town. It described a girl that was driven from the town during the early 1900s or so and how she was convicted of fraternizing with the devil because she was caught draining the blood of several livestock. She was described as having "hair as dark as night and eyes as red as the flames of hell itself and skin, pale like a ghost's"

I believe she is a true vampire and was the same person I encountered before. She probably awoke from stasis and returned to drain blood, before resuming another century of slumber.

This honestly happened to me, but the figure could easily have been a specter, demon or a girl who was just plain insane! (but if she was a local girl I probably would have seen her before)

What Are Sanguinarians?

Humans who drink blood are sanguinarians. Most modern vampires are virtually indistinguishable from humans both physically and biologically. The Vampiric gene that exists within them is a very small fraction of their whole genetic make-up (most of it is human). They have stronger, lithe figures and tend to be able to live longer and are more healthy in general. As for bearing supernatural characteristics%u2026 they don't really have any.

The ones that have supernatural characteristics are true vampires but they are hidden underground from light.

My Run-In With A Vampire

At an early morning, around 4:00 to 5:00 am, my father (I was around eight at this time) had to go inside to grab his keys, for, he forgot them. He left me outside for about three minutes. I waited between two cars, humming and swaying side-to-side.

I heard what seemed like foot steps, but these footsteps seemed hard to hear, like if the person (or thing) was trying to sneak. I peeked over my shoulder for a second to check out what was happening. Nothing was there, yet something black (perhaps a shadow) whooshed by in the darkness. I was scared, yet returned to my position. But, I didn't continue swaying, nor humming. As I stood still, using my wits, yet being foolish I tried to trick the "thing" into coming out again. I heard the footsteps again, this time, it sped up, but stayed at the same volume.

This time the thing came towards my neck, and breathed on it, I could almost swear He/she/it whispered in my ear something like, "I'm coming", a pause soon came, I turned around quickly. But, when I turned around, it was gone. "...For you" Is how it continued. I suspected it was a vampire because, it breathed on my neck, and it had incredible speed.

I Think I am a Vampire

My friends nick-named me Bella from The TWILIGHT saga. If you don't know, Bella turns into a vampire before she dies. I think I'm a vampire. When I cut myself, I always suck it instead of cleaning it under a tap. I also cut my arms on purpose so I can suck on it.

Also, my eyes change colour, from blue to green to brown to hazel to grey. My friends sometimes ask if I'm wearing contact lenses but I've never been near one. My parents don't know but I shocked my boyfriend when he saw my eyes were blue and not hazel like the last time he'd seen me.

My mum and dad have noticed a couple of times when I ask them what colour my eyes are and even on my birth certificate, the eye colour box was left blank which is creepy. They still change colour and my friends still call me Bella. Once, and this is creepy, but my irises once went BLOOD RED for a week.

Interview with the Vampire

When it was announced that Tom Cruise would play the vampire Lestat in this adaptation of Anne Rice's bestselling novel, even Rice chimed in with a highly publicized objection. The author wisely and justifiably recanted her negative opinion when she saw Cruise's excellent performance, which perceptively addresses the pain and chronic melancholy that plagues anyone cursed with immortal bloodlust. Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst are equally good at maintaining the dark and brooding tone of Rice's novel. And in this rare mainstream project for a major studio, director Neil Jordan compensates for a lumbering plot by honoring the literate, Romantic qualities of Rice's screenplay. Considered a disappointment while being embraced by Rice's loyal followers, the movie is too slow to be a satisfying thriller, but it is definitely one of the most lavish, intelligent horror films ever made. --Jeff Shannon

After 200 years of immortality a morose vampire named louis decides to tell a young reporter his story a tale that leaves a trail of blood and death through history from the 18th century creole country to modern day San Francisco.
