Why settle for buying them at the stores - learn to grow them yourself.

The first thing to remember about Vanda orchids is that their roots are always in search of moisture. For this reason, dried flowers which emit ethylene gas will affect the growth of Vanda orchids. They flower 2 to 3 times a year, producing several spikes that may have a profusion of 10 to 12 blooms on each. The nice thing about Vanda orchids is that the blooms will last as long as a month. Since these are tropical flowers, keep in mind the need for the type of sunlight produced in the tropics as well as the amount of humidity required for Vanda orchids to flourish. Don't over-water. Do mind the June to September growing season.

If you are going to invest in these wonderful plants - you will save a ton of money by knowing how to care for them too. Get a good start with the info at Grow Great Orchids.

A Bit of Vanda Orchid History

The question is as old as time: "Why are orchids so highly prized?". Orchids, delicate, exotic and difficult to grow have more than 20,000 species. In the early 1900's, orchids were worn chiefly in corsages by elegant ladies who could afford the price of the lavender-hued cattelyas. It was a symbol of upscale living to wear such a prized floral corsage. With time, many bridal bouquets included delicate vanilla Phalaenopsis orchid. One species that is less difficult for orchid lovers to grow is the Vanda, the Urdu (Hindu) name for an orchid in numerous colors and spottings. The Vanda has the appearance of a strange, yet amusing face.
