Paul Van Doren Is My Hero

Van Doren Rubber Company created the first waffle soled deck shoe in 1966. Since then, VANS have become the ubiquitous shoe of the action sports industry. I've been wearing VANS for nearly 30 years and no matter how many time I drift to other brands, I always find my way back to the original. The shoe company has been such a huge part of my life, I've decided to create this lens in appreciation of their excellence. Join me on this journey, won't you?

This is a work in progress, so check back often for updates.

The Classic

In the summer of 1978, I convinced my mom to finally buy me my firt pair of VANS. They were beautifully simple, easy to put on and take off and you could get them in any color you wanted as long as you wanted red or blue. I opted for the red/blue combo because I was freaky like that. It turns out that a lot of people in south Orange County were freaky just like me.

Of course now you can get VANS in all kinds of colors and patterns, but the style and waffle sole has remained relatively unchanged for more than 40 years. That's the definition of Classic.

Check them out at Vans.com

VANS Swag

Some VANS swag I found on Cafepress, and a sticker for good measure.

VANS goes low-brow

VANS collaborates with Robert Williams in the VANS Vault

Ok, I have no idea about the circumstances of this collaboration between Van Doren Rubber and famed low-brow artist Robert Williams, but I followed a link from the main page and it led me to the Vans Vault. Just check out this one sample in the collection.

There's several designs in the collection varying from the wild to the simple. I'm not sure if Williams designed all styles, but there's quite a few cool sets.

If you want to know more about Robert Williams, check out his Wikipedia page.

Ok, this is an experiment. I have no idea what will pop up, but I put in the Sneaker search term just to see what would turn up. I apologize for any complete disconnection, but it should be fun.

What Do You Think?

Any input you can give on this meager lens is greatly appreciated.

Lensmaster

I grew up a block from the original factory/store in downtown Anaheim dating back to 1966. I have been wearing Vans since August of 1978. I dig the brand and history so much I collect vintage Vans memorabilia. I wear vans daily, which include any one of my vintage pairs.
