Over the past 14 years, Warped Tour has changed dramatically, for better or worse, depending on your view of exactly what the tour should be. In 1995, the "punk" music scene was finally starting to get some attention in the U.S., due in no small part to the rise of Nirvana. Sure, punk had been around since the 70's, but it's impact wasn't felt in the U.S. for nearly 15 years. But as Alternative Radio took the safer Grunge path, Warped embraced the less radio-friendly punk sound. Bands like Pennywise, Bad Religion and Bouncing Souls were welcomed by Warped's crowds while rarely getting commercial airplay. Other bands, such as Green Day, The Offspring, Sublime and Blink-182, popularized punk (and its offshoots), while staying true to its punk roots. Around 2005, the "scene" exploded on a commercial level, as bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and The All-American Rejects achieved platinum sales, further boosting Warped's popularity. Today, you'll find nearly 100 bands at each venue playing everything from old-school punk, metalcore, post-hardcore, pop-punk, emo, screamo, ska, hip-hop and hybrids. You'll also be bombarded with social and political-cause booths, as well as the obligatory masses of assorted "merch" vendors. There's autograph sessions, which allow the fans to interact with their heroes. And don't be surprised to find a few of the performers roaming among the crowds to catch other band's sets. There are multiple stages, which included two alternating main stages, two alternating secondary stages, and a multitude of smaller stages where you can find many of tomorrow's stars. So how the heck do you find who's playing and when? The first thing to do when you enter the venue is to find the large inflatable schedule wall (see photo). It includes the stage lineups and time slots. Grab a blank schedule sheet provided near the wall and start filling in the squares. There's no preprinted schedule, because the lineup changes from city to city, with some bands playing the entire tour and others playing only certain dates.

The 2008 Vans Warped Tour kicks off June 20th in Pomona, CA, criss-crosses the U.S., and ends in Carson, CA on August 17th. In total, the Tour will play 46 cities and include well over 100 bands. Headliners this year include former Blink-182 member Tom Delonge's current band Angels & Airwaves, The Academy Is..., Gym Class Heroes, Story of the Year, Paramore, Motion City Soundtrack, Pennywise, Chiodos, Bouncing Souls, Reel Big Fish, Against Me!, As I Lay Dying, Rise Against and many more. You can also catch rising stars, All Time Low, Mayday Parade, Madina Lake, Cobra Starship, Katy Perry, The Color Fred, Alesana, The Devil Wears Prada, Family Force 5, and Say Anything. And that's just scratching the surface. Factor in the bargain basement ticket price of $20 - $30 and you have yourself an incredible bang for the buck! So grab your sunscreen, shades, camera, comfortable shoes (Vans, maybe?) and lots of cash. Roam among the masses, head for the moshpits, crowd surf or just chill with you friends at this year's version of Punk Rock Summer Camp - I know I will...
