Anarchist, Hero, Victim or Genius?
Is he
A freedom fighter... or a terrorist?
A victim of medical experiments or a genius?
Insane or brilliant?
Are we even sure he's a man?
You be the judge.
V Choose's His Identity
A fascist regime rules England. After surviving medical experiments, V plots his revenge. The face he chooses to wear is that of Guy Fawkes, the man who was found with 36 barrels of gunpowder in the basement of Britian's Parliment, early in the morning of November 5th, 1605.Remember, remember the fifth of November
The gunpowder treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, twas his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England's overthrow.
By God's mercy he was catched
With a dark lantern and lighted match.
Holler boys, holler boys, let the bells ring
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the King.
Guy Fawkes
Remembered every year on Bonfire Night

Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 ? 31 January 1606), also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries, belonged to a group of Catholic restorationists from England who planned the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Their aim was to displace Protestant rule by blowing up the Houses of Parliament while King James I and the entire Protestant, and even most of the Catholic, aristocracy and nobility were inside. The conspirators saw this as a necessary reaction to the systematic discrimination against English Catholics.
The Gunpowder Plot was led by Robert Catesby, but Fawkes was put in charge of its execution. He was arrested a few hours before the planned explosion, during a search of the cellars underneath Parliament in the early hours of 5 November prompted by the receipt of an anonymous warning letter.
Guy Fawkes Night (or "bonfire night"), held on 5 November in the United Kingdom and some parts of the Commonwealth, is a commemoration of the plot, during which an effigy of Fawkes is burned, often accompanied by a fireworks display. The word "guy", meaning "man" or "person", is derived from his name., entry "guy"

The Graphic Novel Version of V
How 2D V looked

"Voilá! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."
-- V's introduction of himself to Evey when they first meet in the "V For Vendetta" movie.
This is how the two-dimensional V looked, as drawn in Alan Moore's original graphic novel, illustrated by David Lloyd. This is the image of V, as seen on the cover of the novel.
Making the face a smiling one works to make it disarming. The smile is a closed mouth one, not something toothy, which comes off as more threatening. The eyes are slightly squinted, which gives a focus to the gaze, as opposed to some masks which make the eyes seem dead.
In the graphic novel, the face does change slightly in the illustration process, thus making different variations of expression. For example, in this version, the redness on the apples of the cheeks on the mask is very pale, but in some of the frames you will see V drawn with bright and defined red cheeks on the mask. A lot also gets communicated by showing parts of the mask or by changing the angle of V's head.

V's personal motto, which is the title of this module and is translated above, is often credited on the internet as the personal motto which Aleister Crowley formulated for himself. In the graphic novel, V tells Evey it was first said by a man she's probably not heard of, a German gentleman by the name of Dr. John Faust. Here is V as he originated, in graphic novel form. His mask and costume live here in still frames. Be sure to look at how line weight, shading, coloring all vary subtly in V's mask as he moves through the story. You'll see him be michevious, sad, angry, thoughtful and stone-faced, as well as many more expressions.
You can get all ten of the V FOR VENDETTA issues as a bound collection.

The Movie Version of V
Or What Hugo Weaving Had To Put Up With

"The only verdict is vengeance, a vendetta, held as a votive not in vain."
As you can see, the translation from illustration to three dimensions came off without any major changes. By working the camera angles on the mask, shooting partial shots and using the shadow from the hat brim, it's possible to make the mask seem to have a range of different emotions. The hat is a bit more rigid and the silhouette is a bit off from 1605, but both changes make a more graphic-looking and physically-stiffer hat, something which functions better in a movie. The choice of fabric in the movie lends a military uniform feeling to V's clothing, but obviously one of his own making.
One interesting note is that the role of V did NOT start out with actor Hugo Weaving, but rather with James Purefoy. After some weeks of shooting, he was replaced. Supposedly he found he had too much trouble breathing behind the mask. Given the masked performance, the audience has no way of knowing if there actually is or isn't any of Mr. Purefoy's performance in the movie V.
